« on: October 04, 2021, 02:33:12 PM »
Looking for some solid flat tappet camshaft recommendations.
STD bore 427
10.5 compression
Trick Flow heads
Holley 850
66 PI intake
JBA Tri-y headers
67 Mustang Fastback
Tremec 5 speed
3.70 rear end gears
Fun street car with maybe autocross/road race use.
Not looking for that last 1/2 HP but want a nice sound at idle.

Where do you want the hp to peak?   Do you have power brakes?

6000 - 6500
manual brakes
I have a new cam from Holman Moody with 290 duration and .526 lift I'm just trying to decide how much power that it would be leaving on the table vs. a custom grind.

Without knowing the rest of their specs, it's hard to say.  A 290° advertised duration can be almost any cam at .050" duration and the .526" isn't doing you any favors with a head that will reach out past that.  By the time you factor lash in, you'd be down around .500" lift.   Also, I'd venture to say that their cam is a single pattern cam and the TFS heads want quite a bit of duration split.

Is this a block that has lifter oiling?

I do have a solid cam that is already broken in. Sounds great 280-288//621-624 on a 112 lobe. 11.07 @ 122.80 and very street friendly. Idles at 850-900. I also have manual brakes. If you want to hear it you can listen to my car on my you tube page which is found in the drag section. 1967 Stang 485

65 center oiler block so it isn't drilled to the lifters.
Single pattern cam 242 at .50 102 intake 109 exhaust.

I’d be at 236/246 at .050”, 109 LSA, 107 ICL, .580”/.574” gross lift.  I’d have it ground with 4 deg of lobe taper to help with cam break-in and continued longevity.

With the TFS heads flowing so well, you don’t need as much duration to get to a specified peak.

Bad thing is right now, no one has cast iron cam cores for FEs, so I can’t promise you an ETA.  Normally it just takes a few weeks but that has been stretched out.

Thanks for the help. I'm not ready to assemble just yet so hopefully the cores will be in stock soon.
