U13 Bronco
« on: February 09, 2014, 08:58:00 PM »
I talked to a guy name Jim from Dallas today, who was interested in an intake adapter.  He was telling me about a Bronco that I'd never heard of, called a U13.  Apparently these were very rare and hard to find vehicles, but he has several.  One of them he got was kind of a basket case, so he is turning it into a race car.  And, of course, he will install an FE!  Pretty cool.

He sent me the following pictures.  The first one is a U13 Bronco that he restored and sold at Barret Jackson.  The other four pics are of the current project:

Dare to be different indeed! We'll definately need updates on that one. I remember seeing a few of those, including on "Green Acres" which was sponsored by Ford. I always liked the early Bronco's.

The Early Bronco Roadsters are rare indeed, only about 5000 produced in 66-68. The survival rate for them is awfully low due to the lack of a top and a rough life on the job.
There used to be a couple of Sand Drag Broncos around here that had a similar look to the project pictured, but I have never seen an asphalt drag Bronco.....very cool
I have a 68 Bronco, but it's a hardtop version. I used to run the Rubicon and other nasty trails with it.
The Bronco guys are just as fanatical as FE guys and the Bronco- Jeep rivalry is just as intense as the Ford - Chevy battle!!

i have been thinking strongly about building one of these to run in truck eliminator at BIR. I would have to sell one of my other cars first if I decide to do it...

Don't sell the gasser, Dean; it made the April Hot Rod in the Scene by Readers section!

Was it rare because of the door opening? Guy here in town has one but I think it has the repo door opening panel, also he replaced the body tub with a glass one. They must have used a cloth top on the originals.

Wow, shades of Doug Nash's (yes, that Doug Nash of transmission fame) all-aluminum Bronco drag car.

http://www.60sfunnycars.com/round6.htm

Ole' Doug had one fast ride with only a 289 Windsor (stroked IIRC) yet with a very low weight due to an all-aluminum frame it was a giant killer. NHRA banned the frame and that was that.

Im Jim,glad to be a member of the FE Power Forum!Im here to have a good time with all the FE members, not get into long drawn out debates  that go with concourses, pebble beach,or marti.Been there done that too many times, been doing that 30+years.so I will try to keep this short and sweet and I hope I can explane a little about the u-13 broncos that jay posted of the one my two nephews and I restored.the biggest thing is they had the fiberglass door inserts as a base, you could opt for steel doors but that changes the way the title will read.real u-13 will say roadster not bronco on the title.ie 1966 FORD ROADSTER.roadsters were made 66,67,68.then nader killed them.the fiberglass door inserts are one of the most popular things to doo to a early bronco. the one that im making the outlaw grudge racer out of is a d.s.o.84 u-13 rodaster, which is HOME OFFICE RESERVE,more known as a holeman moody stropp bronco.By no meens am I saying this was a HMS bronco.its a HOME OFFICE RESERVE.it was built the first week of October in 1965 and was built with a v8 all dates matching.FORD did not start producing v8 broncos until march of 1966.so all the bronco fans will know I will bring it back to as nice of condition as the other one I restored.but only after im done having fun with my 427 powerd project is done.WITH THAT SAID LETS JUST RACE AND LET ME BEAT UP SOME CAMAROS AND NOVAS.

Welcome, Jim. Neat pieces and a cool history lesson. I had never heard of the U13 Broncos before this and would have guessed somebody screwed up the title if I had read one that said '66 Ford Roadster.

That thing should be a beast and the only thing your project seems to be missing is a pair of wings ;D

Im setting it up to do 1/8th mile to start until I get the chassis dialed in.im using  33"tall tires with 5.29 gears, full spool and c-6 with 3500 stall converter with trans brake.rear suspension is 4 link with sliding wish bone, and cantileverd coil over shocks with combo anti rollbar.so its going to take some tweeking to get it to not twist and go straight.then we will put the fogger to it!

Nitrous!? Well, you will not only need wings, but ground clearance to land also ;)

I hope you're conservative with the nitrous unless you're running an aftermarket block. Factory blocks tend to release the crankshaft webbing and supports when fogged. They're not real thick in that area between the cam tunnel and crank saddles.

Very cool project!

Here is another Bronco that my company built leaf springs for. It races Baja in class 3 and won the first race of the year. Unfortunately it's not FE powered, but still a cool race Bronco set up like a U13.

National Spring in El Cajon, CA.

The owners of that Bronco really pushed the limits of the rules for that class. It still has steel Bronco fenders, functional four wheel drive, and leaf springs in the back. The front end is Twin Traction Beam from a later model Bronco, and the rear has a 3 link and leaf springs with shackles on both ends. The rear suspension cycles 20" of controlled and usable travel.

Now if I could only talk them into putting an aluminum FE in it!

Im also building two 41 WILLYS all steel gassers , one FE POWERED,and the other one MILODON hemi powered. The chassie for the hemi car spent 3 years at Don Waldrens shop building to my business partners design. Now I have made a copy of that localy in 3 months, this one is the one that is FE powered with a chevy 4 spd and olds rear.Right now im ready to do the front suspention so I would like to have you do the front springs.Im having trouble loading pictures right now,i guess I have old timers ,but all is cool I will overcome the technical issues with the inter net.

Sorry I haven't been able to help with the pictures, been pretty tied up lately.  Have you tried to set up a Photobucket account to put your pictures online?  There are some directions on how to do this in the forum rules and information thread, here:

http://fepower.net/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=2.0

That's probably the easiest way to get full sized pictures on this message board - Jay

I'll bet that "WA state" guy was Jim Green, a SOHC expert form long ago who had many crates of new Cammer's from the old Holman-Moody warehouse closing days when Ford dropped out of racing. Green still owns the Assassin AA/FD with a blown Cammer used at NHRA cacklefest events and I'm told it does sound different from the Hemi Chryslers!

The 427 sohc bronco belongs to Lonnie Sargent of Woodland WA he still has it i've heard.  the u13 Broncos are not a big a seller fully restored they wont pull more then $20.000  however the holmen moody Stroppe built broncos dubbed the Baja Bronco are priced right up there with the muscle cars.
