I just top off my tanks and disconnect batteries before I leave for the winter. Never have any issues. I live in a pretty dry climate, but I think this should work anywhere. Mike

Sorry to hear about your fall and hope you make a full recovery. I just got back to Steamboat today from Puerto Rico where we have been spending the winter for the last ten years (haven't skied at all during that time) and was thinking about going skiing in the next few days as the mountain is open until the 15th, but after hearing your tale I think I'll work on my truck :) Mike

Well I dont have much to report on the pistons so far as this deal has not made it into the car yet. On the dyno I dont recall hearing any piston knock to speak of. I had to 'dress up' the pistons here and there as the final finish on them is a little rough by my standards! For the money they dont seem to be that bad of piston, but time will tell. The cam specs are: 240/242*@.050 .595-.593 NET Lift ground on a 110* Lobe seperation. The cam lobe is a .875 tappet design.

CYLINDER HEAD FIXTURE HINTS

 

Cutter Speeds: Cast iron, about 80-135 RPM with the carbide cutter. Note:  If using high speed steel; run about 80 surface feet per minute. If using aluminum, run around 200 RPM.

 

Feed: About 15/8� per minute table feed. Experiment with different speeds and feeds to get desired finish.  (The faster the table feed, the rougher the finish will be.)

 

Depth of Cut: No more than .010 is recommended in cast iron.  Finish cut should always be .002 - .003.

 

Direction of Cut: Always cut from the right to the left (if you are facing the machine).

 

Rear Support: Use only one bolt in the rear fixture to attach the head to the fixture.  If you install two bolts in the fixture, they will bind and pivot, making lengthwise leveling impossible.

 

Cutter Drag: If the cutter is dragging on the back side of the cut, tilt the head very slightly (less than 1 degree) to eliminate the problem.

 

Leveling the Head: Use either a very good level, or better yet, a dial indicator to level the head.  We have found it much easier to level the head lengthwise first and then use the rear support hand wheel to raise the head crosswise until level.  Use an end mill holder (not a collet) to hold the flycutter.  Lock the spindle all the way up (feed the table up for desired depth).  Always use a sharp tool � dull tools can cause many problems including chattering and a poor finish.

 I picked up an older Bridgeport mill over the summer and am now compiling a list of accessories and tooling. I have some of the very basic stuff, 6" swivel vise, R-8 collets, end mills, boring head, cheap clamping set, etc.. Looking for recommendations on a DRO and horiz/vert rotary table & tail stock and anything else that you would consider indispensable/desirable.  Great site. I'm Mike Gaffney over on the FE forum and most every where else for that matter. Have always loved my fords, my first car (1965) was a 53 Merc, flathead/merc-o-matic, followed by a 58 fairlane. After I got back from across the pond (1974) I picked up a 65 mustang 2+2 289/4speed/disc brakes. Grew up in Wisc. and moved to Colo. in 75. Vehicles now consist of, 66 mustang fastback (supercharged smallblock/T-5), 66 F-250 (397FE/TKO 600), 67-79 Homogenized F-250 4x4 (396FE/TKO 600), 60 T-Bird (Going in soon 433FE/4R70W), and a 72 triumph TR-6 destined for a sbf conversion. Look forward to learning a lot here and contributing when I can. Mike

 My place is at 7200ft and the majority of my driving will be 6000 and up. That is one of the reasons I was thinking 270. Not really stuck on the solid, it,s just been a long time since I've run one and I thought this would be a good opportunity to try one. In a hyd. maybe something like a 274xe would make a nice compromise. Also thinking I should run the RPM intake instead of the dominator thats on there.Yes, pics of the conversions would be great.
