351C main bearing tang modification question.
« on: July 21, 2019, 01:32:57 AM »
For use in the FE am I to remove the ENTIRE tang, or just narrow it to fit in the factory location in the block and caps?

It has to come all the way off.  The tang register is on the other side of the main saddle for a Cleveland.  Thrust bearings are the same.

Can't you just repeat the notch in the proper place with a Dremel tool and a cut off wheel?

Did this all the time when replacing turbine bearing housing.  The manufacture never put them in because they didn't know if you had a clock or counter clockwise spinning turbine.  Of course our bearing shells were a little bigger so I could use a 90* air grinder and worn down cutoff wheel.
I know industry engineers want that tab left on for a safe guard against spinning the shell even with the crush. Seems to be different philosophy here, me, I'd cut the notch.....JMO

The tangs just make it quicker to locate the bearing.  Many modern engines don’t even have the tangs.  If it spins because the tang wasn’t there, something else was wrong.

To answer your question, yes, you can cut new tangs.
