C8/D2 heads with CJ valves question
« on: May 25, 2017, 01:40:26 AM »
With the bowls opened up to match the CJ valves and cleaned up as well

Are the ports ok as they are for a 418 ??

A bit under 10 to 1, under 500 lift cam

3.70 gear, 3500 lb 65 F100
.......................................................

Another question:

C8/D2 heads, stock size valves, how much gain with:

Cleaned up bowls only

Cleaned up bowls and cleaned up ports

So those are my heads and they really run well.  Setup is currently a 445 @ 9.9:1, ported RPM, those heads, a 1000 HP Holley, Erson rockers, and a Bullet 236 @ .050 cam, 112 LSA on 106.

To answer your question though, modern valve job and cleaning up the guide area is the number 1 concern and will bring the most gains.  However, the C8/D2 port is pretty small although it is on a med riser centerline.  With a standard RPM intake, I believe it's significantly smaller than the intake.  So if you look at a port's cross sectional area, you want it to slowly reduce as it gets closer to the valve, if you do not port, I assume (haven't measured) it won't do that and depending on your intake, you may have a bit of  mismatch as you go big plenum, big port, step into small port, then a decent bowl, it'll run fine, but not ideal

That being said, I also ran a set of C8s with 2.15/1.67, completely unported, on my first 427 build in the Mustang.  I never flowed them, but it wasn't very fast  :o

If it were me, a modern valve job, clean up the bowls, and at least gasket match to a 1247 and blend as deep as you can.

Run it, it will do well.  With a Performer 390 no use putting any more time in the heads.  It'll run nice

I neglected to mention the Performer will be for breakin

I have a 2x4 and 3x2 intake as well, one of them will be utilized after breakin

Sorry Ross.....
I throw your d2 thread around whenever someone asks "what should I do with these heads"  or "Can I use stock heads on a stroker"
It's the easiest answer :P

No worries, I should have taken more pics

As far as swapping manifolds, I would not open the port to a low riser, but if you plan to run a low riser intake, I'd likely open the ports to a 1247 gasket.  At least you'd have the roof and sides close

Have you found any actual flow numbers on removing the #3 & #6 intake runner rocker bolt bumps? You can grind those to match and use studs but I have not seen any documented comparison.

On your 4x2 intake set up look at Eaton Balancing website or email him. He was telling me about a Ford medium riser set up that Ford had a port mismatch on from the factory. There was port work done to blend in but it ended up loosing some power. I do not remember what the combonation was. Maybe someone here has run into it and can give you the run down. I do remember it was not an isolated case.
