4R70W trans on my FE
« on: September 24, 2015, 12:47:54 PM »
Hi All, I am starting down the path to replace my C6 with a 4R70W overdrive transmission.  I am excited about having an electronically controlled transmission that I can program with my laptop. It will also have a lockup-up converter and use my stock shifter. Currently there is a ready-made 4R70W kit available from Performance Automatic, but the cost is extremely high.  That may be the route I go but I am exploring other lower-cost options before I do that. The ideal situation would be if I could buy all the components individualy.  This is possible except for the transmission case.  My understanding is that the AOD through 4R100 transmissions had one piece cases.  QuickTime makes a bell housing for the Ford FE to AOD but so far they haven't been able to produce any information about how to use that bell housing on a one piece case. The pn is RM-9057.  http://lakewoodindustries.com/bellhsg-bb-ford-to-aod-aode.html  Tech Support is supposed to get back to me. I will probably call Jay at broader performance to see if he knows how to do the case modification.

Do any of you know who could modify an AOD/4R70W case?

I'm thinking it must be possible if Quicktime built the bellhousing.

That part is for a manual - I doubt you could make it work for an auto.  IIRC the adapter bells for the AOD require that you cut the bell off the case and bolt the adapter to the pump, like a C4.  OR - they use an bell to engine adapter plate.

The Quicktime site says it's for an AOD automatic. I called Broader Performance. He has done the same thing for his personal Galaxie with a 390 so it makes sense to have him do the work. Much less money than PA.

Post pictures when you get it back. I'm interested to see what the mods were.

The Drag Week boyz mentioned that several of the participants were engaging OD at the far end, as evidenced by a 30-40 mph hump after the 1/8th, instead of 15-20. Like many of you, I get my kicks in the launch more than pre-traps. So, if I had a AOD behind, say a 6500 rpm 390, what gear can I use to trap in 4th (.667)? 6.00? 6.20? More? The more gear, the less 'verter stall, nocierto? One-piece input to kill lockup?

Any update on this? I'm also considering a 4r70W behind an FE for my 1970 F100.

First gear is to big to gear for 4 gears in the 1/4 mile with a 2.75 first gear , you have to gear it for third in the 1/4 and have 4th for the drive home.

As for OP any competent performance machine shop can mill the bell housing off for you or hack it off your self

Wow, great work, i may bend your ear a bit when the time comes to upgrade the C6 in my old camper special.
looks a bit wierd, but not so much as those bulky adapter plates.
really cool.

Yeah, I saw that post in my research. I've called Broader several times. He has a phone number, but apparently no phone connected to it at his end!

Man, that pisses me off.

Maybe a little off topic, but I did not like the low ratio gear set in my C6.   A 2.72 1st gear combined with a 3.75 rear gear was just too much.  The low gear set worked good with a 3.25 rear gear.

I'm just throwing that in there as the 4R70W has a pretty low 1st gear, I think 2.84:1?

So depending on your combination you might not want too low of a rear gear.

C'mon, you know darn well an AOD has a 2.40 first gear. Tsk tsk, I say sorrowfully (shakes head, dabs at tears). Want 'lectric control? 4R gearsets interchange into AOD case; I have to say that the reverse is true.
