Ever since I got this car together the manual r/p steering has been really hard to turn. I even replaced the rack & pinion once thinking there was something wrong with it but it didn't help. It was hard enough I could not keep up with my little drag-n-drive trailer when I was backing up. So power steering was the next option. However, I didn't really have room anymore to put a hydraulic power steering pump on the motor and putting a power rack and pinion was going to pose clearance problems too. So I started looking into electric power steering. There are ready to go kits out there for around $1500+ but I am too cheap for that. Another option was to graft an OEM EPS unit in to my car. A good friend of mine did that on his '67 F250 4x4 with good results so I thought I'd give it a shot.
I ended up using the EPS from a 2009 Toyota Corolla. I chose it because it did not require any external feedback to operate. When it loses it's signal from the CAN bus it goes into a "fail-safe" mode that feels much like early OEM hydraulic power steering. So for about $400 I now have power steering in my race car.
