Non-FE Discussion Forum / Anyone know about SKJ Customs?
« on: December 21, 2012, 09:04:12 PM »
I've been talking to these guys about leasing them a part of a building I own. I visited their shop today and though I don't like seeing a Cobra replica with a LS under the hood, they seem to do a nice job and seem to really know what they're doing. Most of their Cobra cars have small block 351 Fords stroked to 427 with a Tremec and a Curry 8.8.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has had any dealings with these guys: http://skjcustoms.com

Thanks!

I had a major disaster back on Sept. 11 of all days. A retention dam broke above our home and we we got flooded in a major way; here's a youtube video of the flood hitting our home:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpE-IgiUifM&noredirect=1

Our neighbor across the street took it from the roof of his home; our house it the tan brick home where the flood water is hitting the garage doors dead on. It did a lot of damage and we have a lot to clean up and repair, but here's what I would like to ask:

The flood put about 3' of slimy muddy water through my shop and made a mess of my 70 Stang and ruined a lot of the parts I had collected for the 64 Galaxie I'm rebuilding and messed up even more of them.

The question I have for you guys is this: I have a lot of parts like a sideoiler block, some gear sets for toploaders, third member pumpkins etc. I cleaned them up by washing off all the mud and crap, but they all have some surface rust on them. I have such a mess here that it's going to take years to get it all cleaned up and put back together again, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to stop the rust damage until I can get to everything and get it cleaned up properly? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, it put the Galaxie frame and drive train in about 2' of muddy water, so it could be in the toploader and 9" rear. I don't think there's anything in the 496" FE as it didn't get up to the exhaust or intake ports, just got a little above the pan rails of the engine.

FE Technical Forum / More oil drain back questions
« on: August 04, 2012, 11:23:56 AM »
OK, so I trimmed the gaskets so that they don't interfere with the drain back holes that are milled into those Edelbrock heads. That part looks fine; then I looked at the matching surface of the Blue Thunder Med Riser 8V intake manifold and there isn't any provision milled into the intake manifold like that shown on the intake Howie posted in the other thread. It appears that the only drain back I would have is the thickness of the intake gasket.

The question is; am I worried about a non-issue or do I need to grind on the intake manifold and create a channel for oil to drain back?

FE Technical Forum / Edelbrock Heads, oil drain back hole...
« on: July 29, 2012, 05:03:39 PM »
I've never installed a set of Edelbrocks before so maybe this is just what they look like, but it looks like a leak waiting to happen to me. Here's a picture of one of my Edelbrock heads sitting on the 454 sideoiler stroker I'm building. As you can see, the gasket doesn't seem to line up right with that drain back channel in the intake side of the head surface.

Anyway, is this going to be a problem?

OK, now I guess I've got to figure out how to post a picture.....

FE Technical Forum / Autolite 4100 sticking float?
« on: April 21, 2012, 01:43:51 AM »
I have a rebuilt 4100 1.12 on my 69 Bronco with a stroked 347 and it usually runs great. But there have been a few times when the front float sticks and makes the carb spew gas out the breather that's on top of the front of the carb. I've taken it apart 3 or 4 times and can't see why it's hanging up, it seems to be free and clear, but it still hangs up once in awhile.

Any ideas or suggestions? I would really like to keep the carb on this outfit, but it's starting to worry me because it puts so much gas on top of the engine when it sticks that I'm afraid of a fire. If I can't solve it, I'll have to look at getting some other carb; maybe a 670 truck avenger.

Thanks for your help...

FE Technical Forum / Cammer Books
« on: April 04, 2012, 01:23:57 PM »
Mostly because of Jay's excellent thread on his 519" cammer build, I've been looking for reading material on the 427 SOHC and so far this is the only thing I've found:

 http://www.amazon.com/How-Build-Blown-Alcohol-Engines/dp/055779529X/ref=cm_sw_em_r_asp_Kw6TD.1WN5CDG_tt

It's not the Ford shop manual, but it looks like it would have some good information about how to build one of these nasty beasts.

FE Technical Forum / Autolite 4100 with frozen secondaries?
« on: March 29, 2012, 09:28:42 PM »
I hope this is the right forum :) But I have a 112 Autolite 4100 that's all there, but the secondaries are frozen solid. I took it apart as far as I could and soaked it for a day in Berrymans, but that secondary shaft is still frozen solid. Any suggestions or ideas about how to get that thing loosened up?

FE Technical Forum / 416 Capsaddle Tri-power next chapter
« on: December 24, 2011, 09:34:47 PM »
As some of you will recall, I built a 416 with one of Shoe's Capsaddles, it has a solid cam similar to a Comp 282S, stock C3AE-G heads and about 9.5 - 1 static compression. I wanted it to look the part for my 61 Starliner, so I built it using an original Ford Tri Power intake and carbs. The dyno results were a little disappointing as the motor made just under 400 HP. Here's the YOutube of the dyno session:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRg3Cc3BsYQ&feature=related

The consenses was that the Tri Power and heads were the cork. So, I took a set of C2AE heads I have and another Tri Power intake and had them ported to flow better. The heads now flow 320 Intake and 240 Exhaust. I think the combustion chamber are also smaller, so the compression is going to bump up a bit too.

Any guesses as to how much power I'm going to pick up?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Ring Gear & Pinion?
« on: December 08, 2011, 06:55:49 AM »
I need to change the 9" rear end and Dana 30 front axle gears in my 69 Bronco. I swapped in a NV3550 in place of the 3 speed Toploader transmission; the NV3550 has a .78 OD 5th gear which makes the 3.50 gears I have now way too tall. If I go with 4.56 I end up with a little less top end gear, 4.11 a little more.

The question is; what's the difference in the ring gear and pinion options; I see Motive, Yukon, USA and other brands all available in either ratio, but there's a big difference in the cost of these gear sets. I want a good set, but this Bronco isn't for racing and doesn't make huge HP, it has a slightly warmed up 302 with Headers, a Comp XE256H cam, a 4100 4bbl carb and Ford Cast Iron intake.

So what's the difference in these gear sets? Is it worth paying a few hundred more for a Yukon or one of the other more expensive sets over the USA or one of the other less expensive sets?

Member Projects / 64 Galaxie Project
« on: December 07, 2011, 11:43:08 PM »
I finally got the painted body back today and took a few pictures. I have an album on Photobucket with some pictures of the project, there's also an album there with more detail of the 496 FE you see in the frame. Here's the Galaxie album:

FE Technical Forum / Crossbolted 390 block?
« on: December 05, 2011, 07:13:19 PM »
Just wondering what you guys think a crossbolted 390 block is worth. The sonic map looks OK for +.040 over but that's about it to be safe. Thinking of building a 4.25 stroke motor for my 74 F100 4X4. Are the crossbolts just a waste of money?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / 64 Galaxie front end stabilizer?
« on: November 24, 2011, 10:31:57 PM »
I've about got the frame, drive train and suspension finished on my 64 Galaxie and decided to put a stabilizer on the front A arms. In checking with Steve aka the 64galaxie guy in Kingman AZ about a OEM stabilizer; he says there were three types. A flat bar and round bar that tied the two A arms together and one that ties each A arm to the front frame crossmember. All he has left is the one that ties to the frame. He sent me a picture of them, but I've never seen them before, so I'm wondering if anyone here knows about this option.

I can always get an after market one that ties the A arms together, but if the frame to A arm system works as well, I think it would be cool to have it.

Thanks in advance for any help or advise.

FE Technical Forum / Jay; muffler location for 64 Galaxie?
« on: November 18, 2011, 06:32:13 PM »
I'm building the exhaust system for my 64 Galaxie with the 644HP 496 FE. I'm using ceramic coated Hookers with 3" ball flanges welded onto the header collector, from there it has an X system like this : http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-642130/

I'm thinking of putting the mufflers just in front of where the pipes turn up to go over the rear end, but am wondering is there's any problem doing this I'm not seeing ahead of time.

FE Technical Forum / Exhaust port mismatch?
« on: September 05, 2011, 10:54:51 PM »

I got the Hooker Super Comps for my 64 Galaxie back from getting ceramic coating and started to mock them up when I noticed that the ports on the Dove SK heads I'm using are about 1/4" higher than the flange on the headers.

My headers are like these: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HOK-6205HKR/ and they have the 4 threaded holes for each exhaust port. The headers also have the 4 holes for these heads, but the flange and gaskets are made about 1/4" lower than the head port is.

I knew there were port heights, but didn't think I needed to worry about it because the headers had the same 4 bolt configuration as the heads.

Does anyone know if the Dove SK heads had an oddball port location? I can't imagine Hooker would make it's headers for a 64 Galaxie to fit a 390 GT head.

This just seems odd to Ross and I both, we've been talking about it and can't quite figure out what's the best way to proceed.

Thanks!
