Non-FE Discussion Forum / Tundra forum? (ducking)
« on: January 03, 2019, 10:56:56 AM »
I just bought me a tundra, sorry ford doesn't make an extended cab with  rear opening doors. so I am looking for a good forum. The ones I have found so far don't inspire much confidence. I get the  impression tundra owners don't wrench much, more interested in dressing them up. Shocker.

FE Technical Forum / affordable oil to use for a run and dump
« on: September 27, 2018, 10:33:26 AM »
I am putting the 410 back together after a coolant leak in the oil and top end rebuild (didn't touch the cam or lifters). It was never milk shaky, just snot in the valve covers and under the manifold. I will of course dump the old oil and filter then run it for a cycle and dump the oil and filter again. I normally run brad penn, but don't see the need to spend the $$ and time (local dealer is a ways away and keeps limited hours) for a run and dump like this. What are folks using these days, non synthetic, for solid lifter motors? I know Valvoline VR1 used to be popular, so was Rotella (don't remember which flavor). Are these still good candidates for high ZDPP? What other affordable options are out there for this purpose? Thanks

FE Technical Forum / Magazine 431 build with 555 hp....
« on: July 15, 2018, 10:50:45 PM »
I came across this article from EPWI, see attached. It was given to me by a friend. It was just a standalone magazine for just this build, kind of a interesting way to promote your product. Like any magazine article it has misinformation, but it is not bad overall. Its a bit thin on details over the heads and camshaft, but the numbers are impressive for a 431. I do wonder if these were standard RPM heads or pro-ports. Either way not a cookie cutter recipe for getting 555hp out of a 390. :-) I do find it interesting as well that they choose a 4.125 crank over the more popular 4.25. I wonder if they have a surplus of those cranks to sell. :-)

FE Technical Forum / Scott Foxwell I apologize if I....

Created any shit for you here. I am sad to see you delete you posts and remove
What was valuable information for me. I had hoped to read it a few times to
Learn something new. In the interest of not losing what I posted in your soon to be deleted post I will paste my response here.

“Whoa! I wasn’t trying to start a fight with my comments. I am just thoroughly impressed with this combination. You are pulling some high hp out of those heads and out of 390 ci without turning high rpms. I have been on these forums since the mid 2000’s and I have seen a lot off 390 builds and track times. There is a reason people stroke, use power adders, aftermarket heads, rpms,
etc to get better numbers. I know the ss guys use a lot of attention to detail and have a lot of knowledge to get impressive numbers out of stock parts and parameters. That is really what I mean by black magic. It’s the tribal knowledge of a platform and the tricks of the trade.
Us regular folk who don’t do this for living can only hope to pick up some of this along the way so thank you for being so generous with sharing the details behind the build. I know a lot do not reveal all because for those that race it’s a competitive edge. What is the intent of this motor? Will it see strip duty?”

FE Technical Forum / C3AE-E crank question
« on: June 01, 2018, 12:40:13 AM »
I am looking at a crank with this casting number and all my books show this as a plain jane 390 crank yet this one has the full groove and is in a 63 center oiler 427. Is this really a 427 crank or is it just a 390 crank someone tossed in during a rebuild? Thanks

FE Technical Forum / Nylon fans??
« on: June 08, 2016, 10:28:04 PM »
Anyone have experience using them, aftermarket flexo lite types or other brand. My 99 250 runs  a plastic oem fan never an issue but it is clutched. I am looking at a solid so faster rpms 6 k max. Thoughts on longevity?  I like the idea that when they break they will cause less damage.

I posted this up on the other forum but didn't get much so I was looking for some more input. I should have a new rocker coming to replace that worn out one. Thanks

FE Technical Forum / Performer RPM vs Streetmaster for the street....
« on: April 04, 2016, 09:53:42 AM »
I have three intakes in my stock to choose from: Performer RPM, Streetmaster, and F427. This is going in a 62 galaxie spirited street use only. I run it to redline through the gears and have fun with it around town and up in the canyons, certainly don't baby it. Setup is a 416, 9.5:1, C1AE's CJ valves and pocket porting chamber at 68 cc, solid flat tappet cam 230 @ .050 w/ .525 lift, performer RPM intake, FPA tri-y headers, full 2.5" duals with H pipe, 750 speed demon, gears out rear are 3.5. Stock COM tranny with stock converter, next year or two I plan on swapping out tranny and going with a hotter converter likely 2200-2500 range.

I am looking over Jay's book trying to debate which intake to choose. I find it perplexing that the performer RPM would have such a dramatic drop from the base 428 to the next up. The differences to me are the heads and cam, all other variable seem similar. The C6' have smaller ports and would certainly not be matched to the intake, the flow was similar to the CJ's but the exhaust did out flow the CJ's. The cam was a split with more exhaust duration. Could all this add up to better low speed performance for the RPM on the base 428?

This is leaving me a bit discouraged as my combo is not a mirror of any of those. I am down displacement, running different heads, different cam, so an apples to apples comparison is tough. However I can't ignore the performer RPM is down close to 50 ftlbs and similar hp until around 3300 rpm compared to the streetmaster and maybe even more over the F427. F427 doesn't have the performance up top so I am ruling that one out. The RPM however is about 20 ish up on the streetmaster in the 3300 to 4500 ish range. With my driving style I view my range 2000 to 5500 so this is making for a tough decision. I am leaning towards the streetmaster as it seems more consistent across engines and I do like that power increase at slower rpms.

Your thoughts?

I am using Barry's book to mock up my intake. I had a coolant leak so I pulled the intake and wanted to finish port matching the intake and figured now was a good time to check proper fitment according to Barry's book.

First question is in the book it tells to check the china wall gap and then level the intake using a stack of feeler gauges. To me this means left to right but I was unsure if that was suppose to be front to back as well. I took the larger measurement at the front and made two stacks of feeler gauges and leveled the front. I then repeated the rear using the larger measurement at the rear. So I used two stacks of .105" at the front and .115" at the rear. Is this the correct way to do this or should I have used .115" at the front and rear at all four corners?

Assuming this was the correct way to do this here is what I came up with.

Certainly not happy with this intake, a used Edelbrock RPM that previous owner claimed was uncut but now I am not so sure. My heads, C1AE's, were cut to reduce chamber cc's down to 68cc's. Shop also cut the intake to compensate for this to avoid cutting the intake. Problem is when this was done I did the reassembly and did not check intake fitment like this. In fact I was dumb enough to port match the intake using intake gaskets as a template and not the method that Barry prescribes in his book.

Here you can see how far off the tops of the ports are, as well as some other pictures of fitment problems I see. I am wondering at this point if this intake can be saved or if it is better off selling to someone with uncut heads and bigger ports. Your thoughts? Am I going to have to run two intake gaskets stacked to get this manifold back up into position after the necessary cuts?

Also while I ran it this way for 8 years no leaks the mismatch on this tube really concerns me too. Do different makes/vintages of water pumps have different heights on this tube?

Private Classifieds / Free Superwide 70 tire
« on: November 18, 2015, 11:11:59 PM »
Just pulled off this 14x70 Superwide tire from my spare. Held air for the 15 years I have had it. Never used as I never had a flat. But no dry cracking or weathering. Still looks good.

I went to a different rim size and have no need for this. I would hate to throw it in the dumpster if someone needs it. I am in the Denver area and do not want to ship a tire, unless someone really wants this thing that bad. Toss me some cash for my time and I will ship it. If you are local its free. rdmobile427 at gmail

I have a complete set of 77-79 Tbird front disc brakes with spindles. I was going to use them on my 62 galaxie to switch over from drums. I changed my mind and went Wilwood, I wanted 4 wheel disc.

These are complete but I pulled them from a wrecking yard and they would need gone through. I am in the Denver area and would prefer to sell local only as they are heavy! But if you are willing to pay shipping I could see what it would take. $50 obo. rdmobile427 at gmail

I have a load of scrap I need to take to the crusher this Saturday Nov. 21st, and I am prepping for a move. I do not want to haul these things to the next place. So I may scrap them if I have no takers.

FE Technical Forum / AOD behind an FE?
« on: October 28, 2015, 08:35:53 PM »
What can they handle TQ wise? I see some vendors offering 600-700 hp units but no torque figures. I like the idea of just going OD tranny vs gear vendors. But the 4R70W and higher units are basically a C6 with OD and I still fear the weight and power sucking properties. So a AOD being more akin to a FMX with OD appeals to me.

Anyone running one with feedback?

Member Projects / 62 galaxie finally done!
« on: September 29, 2015, 09:51:10 PM »
Well they are never done but this phase is done. Just completed with shakedown run this last weekend. Here is short write up  ;) . I will be posting more as the weeks come, in particular I plan on giving a lot of vendor feedback.

Switched over to 4 wheel manual disc brakes from wilwood (4 piston calipers) using a corvette (i know) master cylinder, front suspension 25% stiffer springs lowered an inch (or so they say seems way lower than I planned), 1" front sway bar from quickor, Blisten shocks from RCD, 20% stiffer 5 leaf rear springs lowered 2" but left out rubber isolators so it is really 1 1/2" lower, 7/8" rear sway bar from quickor, all new brake lines and 3/8" fuel line using that copper nickle stuff (freaking awesome stuff), modded stock brake pedal to increase leverage, rims are 17x8 Boss 338 (american made), and tires are continental extreme contact DW 225 50 17's in front and 255 45 17's out back. Oh yeah and 30 mm eibach wheel spacers (adapters) for the front. Spacers bolt to hub and wheels bolt to spacers/adapters. Oh yeah and also had steering box rebuilt.

Impressions so far are this thing flat out handles!! Feels like a completely different car coming from stock. Almost no body roll, firm ride but not too firm. It takes bumps and cracks very well. Still comfortable to ride long distance (I think) but still carves the corners. Tires just flat grip, toss it in a corner and it just responds. I know the box helped but the tires make a world of difference.

As for the brakes I am still sorting that out. I have never had manual brakes so I guess I dont know what to expect. The pedal travels a lot further than I expected before the brakes engage. But once engaged they stop well. Can't lock them up, that or I havent stomped hard enough (still braking things in). So I may have some tweaking to do there, but still really happy with the brakes. So much better than before.

Nice to have a car that finally handles and brakes as well as it hauls ass!!

FE Technical Forum / o/t: manual vs power brakes
« on: November 28, 2014, 04:54:53 PM »
Planning out disc brake conversion for my 62 galaxie and trying to figure out whether to go manual or power disks. I am planning on doing discs on all four corners. The current motor only makes around 11-12" in park and 8-9" in drive brakes applied. I doubt future motors will be any more vacuum friendly.

To me this means manual would be better to run, but I have my doubts about braking satisfaction. This is a cruiser that gets driven hard so power steering and power brakes are nice to have. If power is really the better way to go then I am willing to put in a vacuum pump. The simplicity of manuals is real plus.

Anyone here with real world experience that could offer up advice? Thanks
