FE Technical Forum / Re: shimming valvesprings for equal pressure?
« on: August 21, 2020, 07:43:25 PM »
Man...I enjoyed this thread. The rather violent valve float videos were very educational. Seeing all the shimmy or wobble of those springs makes me think the conical type have a great advantage in that the always changing dimensions reduce harmonics. Not that I care about Uber high RPM operation but the occasional over rev' is bound to happen.

Also learned that trolling engine builders might not be ideal.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Did we all see this 482 build?

Seen it earlier and enjoyed the "Celebrity Beat-down" that ensued. Makes me look forward to my own bench building. Aluminum blocks get a lot of flack around here. Is 500hp consistent with the part selection? Any chance the quirks of aluminum blocks also held back that engines results? Impossible to know without more data I suppose.

Thanks all for the input. I too like to check out they lay of plug wires but it's apples to oranges for my motor currently. In my case it's easy to keep #7 and #8 apart.

FE Technical Forum / Distributor, Cap and Wires 180° out - Runs okay...
« on: August 13, 2020, 04:25:42 PM »
I was going to throw some stones and hijack My427stang's post but figured I'd just swipe one of the pics from it instead. Based on the scenario below should I reorientate my mechanical advance distributor? When I bought my Cougar it ran but was in a state of disrepair. Vacuum leaks galore, corroded cap & rotor etc...When I bought the car my distributor was wired completely 180° different than what I find on-line for firing order. Seeing the recent dyno motor pics reminded me to inquire with the experts. Here's my old 390 with a new QF 680 carb that I recently installed. My plug wires are routed basically 180° from what is normal. The engine has always had a slight sputter at cruising speeds of 45-50mph. A very notable drop off in torque after 4500 rpm. This was true with both the old and new carb. I have always attributed these to an old tired engine. The carb was changed as I suspected the throttle body and butterflies of the old carb to be worn. It was a 1st generation Demon 650 and no proper throttle stop had been installed.

Vendor Classifieds / Re: Group buy-in on custom Scat forged cranks....

How 'bout I change my request to a pair of 2.1875" stroke cranks but allow Scat to combine the order into a single 4.375".... Ya know, for convenience.

Bumping this thread. Please do check out Brent's post in the vendor section and consider picking up a SCAT 4.375 crank.

If the OP can change from 4.25 to 4.375 then we may only need one more person to make it happen.

Brent - can you clarify the details of the Group Buy? Like E4340, billet/forged, nitrided etc.... Thank you.

Thanks for being so great guys!

Other places on the internet aren’t so cool to deal with

Dave
I know what you mean. For what it's worth I had a good look at my own PCV setup. There was a slight vacuum leak in the hard plastic elbow that mated with the valve itself. At least with the hose sitting on my work bench. So I swapped in a new rubber elbow and it's all good now. Didn't really change how it runs but who knows how old the original plastic piece was.

Glad you found the problem. I hope it's just that one item that needs fixing. I've never had a close look at my PCV check valve but will now just in case.

From the first post I am reading that the idle speed had to be increased due to the "added load". That sounds strange to me as you removed a mechanical fan. Generally the result of less load and more HP when the mechanical fan is removed even if a better alternator is added. I'd return the choke to how you had it before and see if that fixes the problem. It just may not be opening fully and making the engine run fat and sluggish.

Otherwise my guess is that something got bumped and disconnected during the upgrades. Increasing the idle speed will open the butterflies and in extreme cases start using fuel from the main jets. This can make all sorts of run issues. Check the timing and make sure all the plug wires are in good shape and have a solid connections. Look for a vacuum leak or something else that could impact engine idle. Is the new alternator working well? Should be 14V+ or so when running.

Barry's two books and Jay's are great.

Titles?  Where to find them?

Not looking to build a monster - street & occasional track car.

Just Google Barry Rabotnick and his two Ford FE books should pop up. I got mine from Amazon. I bought Jay's book from his website link he provided.

Sorry to hear this. Anything recent would be in the YouTube format. Check out MyVintageIron perhaps? Barry's two books and Jay's are great. Hard to consider them recent but the basic engine platform hasn't changed either. The exception being Jay's new products. I don't think anyone is writting anything like a "How to make 3000hp twin turbo intercooled E85 FE stroker" but I'd love to be wrong.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Cross bolting cost?

I think I read somewhere to budget 1k for adding crossbolts to a FE block. Totally anecdotal and I have no quote or sources though. Perhaps not a helpful response but maybe someone else will chime in.
