Non-FE Discussion Forum / Distributor gear roll pin is bothering me
« on: May 09, 2020, 05:47:44 PM »
Hi guys
As most of you know I have a distributor spud in my mustang that Jay made up for me.
It works great.
What’s bothering me is the fit of the steel gear I have installed. This is a stock size distributor shaft so to me cross drilling out of the question. Well bless Cranes little heart they have a gear (PN 34970-1) that is drilled at two depths. One of the depths is perfect to put the gear at the correct measurement on the shaft. Fantastic.
What’s nagging me is the the holes did not fit sideways. One hole was off a little. So I drilled a bit of the shaft out to enable the pin to pass through. I’m thinking that the void left will be enough to maybe snap the pin.
I could remedy the problem by going to a larger diameter pin, like .156 or .187.
Wuchya’ll think?

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Feel stupid asking

But, does anybody know of a quality billet or chrome or some nice looking thermostat housing for my mustang. Since it’s right up front it has to look good.
They’re expensive so I’m looking for some first hand knowledge.
The two I’ve seen are the Billet Specialties and the Canton. They’re o ring deals. Do they work?
I’ve only used oe iron types before so this is a new world for me.
I guess I could work on an iron one, as in sand it and paint it black, but I think I would like to explore new stuff.
Thanks in advance.

I guess I find his funny.
My face shield broke again. I’ve repaired it a couple times. This time it bit the big one.
So I’ve been searching for the last ohhhhh 20 minutes and have found one from HF.
I’m trying to find a better one and all that keeps coming up are those damned Covid protection masks and face shields.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Great tool

Can’t wait to see that title spun out ::)
Anyway, I don’t know how many of you work off your back in the garage but this is the best tool I ever bought from HF.
I’ve used it for many many things other than trannys and it works really really well. I’ve had it for years and it still works really well. I may have said this in another thread but every time I use it I’m impressed with it.
I stabbed my trans today and to say it was easy would be an understatement. Of course prep plays a part but this tool is really great. One guy, one trans, priceless.
Wonder if this thread could help others by listing really great tools.

Well as many of you know I’m a camera operator in Hollywood.
Started shooting shows with no audience this past week. Getting the emails now that everything is going down till at least the 30th.
So, I’ll have plenty of time to work on my cars, Damn. :)
Don’t mean to be flippant because many will be in a tough spot but it’s a welcome deal for me. Just hope Summit and my local suppliers like fastener companies stay working.
Lemons/lemonade. Hope y’all don’t get hurt to bad.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Pilot bushing depth
« on: March 13, 2020, 12:53:10 PM »
Hi y’all.
About to install clutch in the mustang. I just installed the pilot bushing and it’s about .045 proud of the crank flange.
I don’t remember it being proud of the flange and I really don’t want to beat on it to seat it.
It’s a Dorman bushing .500 thick.
Anybody have a memory of this?
Edit
Oh the crank is a 1U

I have a crank pulley spacer I have to take .385 (the width of Jay’s crank target) off of. This spacer has bolt holes through it. Is it safe to turn that down on a lathe? I’m assuming if you go nice and slow you’re ok. Or to be more accurate, higher speed but go slow with the cutter. Bad idea or ok?
I’ve done some spacers and little stuff but this is a bit larger and of course you’d break into the holes.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Preference of hydraulic TO bearing
« on: February 26, 2020, 02:13:13 PM »
Was wondering if y’all had any experience based preferences on hydraulic throw out bearings.
The internet is no help whatsoever.
I have a McLead diaphragm setup coming and am going hydraulic TO.
Have read lots about leaking but who knows if the authors have set them up right or are just whiners.
I’m thinking about going McLeod as they are close to me, just in case.
Thanks

Private Classifieds / WTB Air cleaner for my wagon
« on: August 27, 2019, 12:20:47 PM »
Hi guys
Anyone have a Ford air cleaner for my ‘66 wagon. Not concerned about the correct year, just the right look.
One other thing. I’d like to put a snorkel on it like my ‘74 pickup to bring in cool air maybe through the cut out in the core support. I don’t remember if this was done in the 60s cars.
Maybe someone can help my memory out. Meanwhile I’ll try a inter web search.
Thanks

This one would work well

Anyone know anything more about these than I do?
I emailed the guy this morning. His name is Eric and he’s here in the LA area. He told me these are not refurbished MSD. They ARE manufactured off shore then of coarse told me MSDs are made in Mexico. The manufacturer is the same that does the Jegs stuff. The price is great but I’m a wonderin’.
I asked him to tell me all about him and his company and got pretty cryptic answers.
I’m figuring he doesn’t want to say to much about where they’re built. To bad.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Best intentions
« on: July 05, 2019, 12:34:32 PM »
I had to come in and take a break for my brain.
The other day I recurved my dizzy (on the wagon) and it’s running great. Diz came out and went back in like butta.
At the time I made a mental note to go in and order a new gasket as the one on there is a bit dry and shrunk and is leaving that lovely black fog all over the front of my manifold. No prob right.
Took out the diz and changed the gasket. Went to put it back in and nice nice nice aww c’mon girl, just a little more, c’mon.
It’s been over an hour of trying to get her to fall that last 1/4ish (it’s not the new gasket, I’m getting a perfect metallic thunk). The oil drive is just down there laughing at me.
I’m just venting. I’ll get it but it made me think of what other stories are out there where you had the best of intentions for a quick little job and it bit you in the ass.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Public Thank You to Jay

Hey Jay just a quick thank you for keeping this forum clean of all the crap out there.
I’ve just cleaned out a couple of forums that disguise adds as new topics. Not to mention keeping us clear of any normal adds. It’s nice to have a clean home.
THANK YOU.
