Title: TEN ceases publication of 19 titles
Post by: Falcon67 on December 06, 2019, 02:12:45 PM
Of the 22 in print, 3 will remain.

Today is a day we’ve all dreaded. With the exception of Motor Trend, Hot Rod, and Four Wheeler, TEN Publishing will cease the print products of its magazine brands. These titles will continue as web sites and social media accounts, and major investments are being made in digital, so the editors may keep their jobs to continue with that content. As a lifelong fan of print who made his career as a magazine editor, this is a devastating heartbreak of a day—but not a surprise. 19 magazines will stop being printed. This closure of print was not a decision made by the MotorTrend company. Also, this does not affect the MotorTrend app or online video.

Well, that kind of sucks.  I like the print magazines a lot more than the web sites...

This is just another extension of the "Corporate Mentality". for at least the last 20 year, corporations buy up competitors, down size as much as possible and because they have bought the competition, they can eliminate the less profitable ones, steer the subscribers to the ones that are left, maximizing their profits.

Hopefully it leaves a vacuum for start up company's to compete with them but, of course, they will buy them out, too :(

I also, would rather read print.

It's amazing how long some print publications have managed to hang on.

I create content for both print and web, and the shift in demand just over the last 10 years has been dramatic. Even small, local publications are drying up with advertisers favoring cheap or free online exposure, instant response, and on-demand analytics. I still prefer a physical product, maybe more than ever.

It sucks, but the shift to YouTube as a platform for some of their content is pretty good.  It’s not as technically detailed as the good engine articles used to be so that’s definitely a loss

Same - I'm a web/network guy and do a lot of stuff online.  Connected everywhere.  Still prefer the feel of page turning.

Sad indeed. Just look at other remaining big name (in circulation) magazines and they are so page-thin, due to lack of advertisers, that they will also soon disappear. Those that remain will keep jacking up annual subscription rates to stay afloat, knowing that it's a self-defeating plan as it drives more paper page turners to the 'Web instead.

I wonder if mail rates have something to do with it, certainly they can't make much money off the subscribers. I think postage cost twice what I paid for the subscription. The newsstands seem to have three hundred different titles around here but the automotive ones have shrunk and now will shrink very drastically. There will be thirty skateboard or marijuana magazines for each car title.
