FE Technical Forum / Re: 390 Build
« on: August 26, 2020, 04:16:23 PM »
definitely get a budget to start and work from there. If it needs  bored out, I would look at a stroker kit from Barry, a performer rpm manifold , updated ignition ( MSD box ) good valve job and maybe clean up the heads some unless there is money for after market heads. If you had money for heads I would just get with one of the builders here and buy a set ready to bolt on, you have headers so I would run 3" open exhaust straight out no mufflers I would get a cam from one of the builders here that will match the other parts and based on any vacuum accessories, that would definitely push you over the 400 hp mark..
You could also check out Jays article on his web page for Car Craft.. it has good info and parts on  390 build like your wanting

I would really recommend getting an accurate weight from a public scale. My 66 F100 with 390/c6 and only mods of front and rear sway bars with 10 gallons of fuel plus 175lb driver is 4200 ;bs. the obvious of 1000lbs extra will make a determination in your choice of parts. I have had 4.11,3.50 gears and in my opinion if your just in the city would be go with the bigger gear. I would get a mechanical advanced dist. and dial it in..the vac secondary just always lags a little, but I'm not a carb tuner.
Had a 270h cam and it pulled good but swapped out for a custom cam for my set up. Stock heads and valve size with just enough polishing on the intake and exhaust runners to remove the rough and nothing in the bowls. The custom cam was night and day difference and the cost was negligible. I would use a performer rpm or a port a sonic manifold.. the only difference by the seat of you pants is a lot more top end..but both do great up to your 5000rpm.. after the headers I would definitely recommend a larger exhaust pipe of 3"  it sounds great and much better performance than the 2" most muffler shops put on
my f100 is just a 390 + .30 c/6 and 4.11 gears and it's a monster on the street stop light to stop light plus the added bonus I towed a 12,000 lb trailer behind it 2000+ miles from the Midwest through the rockies and it never flinched and when I dropped the hammer it would out accelerate traffic to merge onto the highways.
I guess the point is match all your parts and you won't be disappointed

I disassembled mine and used POR 15 on the truck. I live on a gravel road and it's been 6-7 years ago. they look the same as the day I put them back on.

So... if they would make a kit for a turbo 400 look like a C6, would it be a tranny tranny?

That's awesome

FE Technical Forum / Re: Oil in coolant.
« on: June 24, 2020, 12:04:53 PM »
That would put water in the oil, but not oil in the water. For oil to get in the water, it has to be a place where oil pressure will overcome the pressure of the cooling system. There are only a couple areas where that typically happens.

Thanks for pointing that out..I have always seen it the other way around with coolant in the oil. Good to know about this, never would have thought of those oil passages failing

I have had several blocks that were pressure tested etc and everything was fine. When they chased the threads in the water pump bolt holes they went too deep and put a small crack in the casting inside the valley area. It was just enough coolant to see a small puff of white smoke when I dropped the hammer on the highway. I am by far no expert but this seems to be the most likely spot. I always use a Loctite thread sealant and double check bolt length now.

There might be the smallest leak in the intake gasket as well. I have seen that also
Great place to ask questions here You will get a fix..this forum is the brain trust for Fe motors

FE Technical Forum / Re: cruising rpm
« on: May 09, 2020, 11:58:42 AM »
This was just purely a  HYPOTHETICAL question..the car has never been driven longer than an hour to local car shows..that being said the car is in storage and has been for 6 years. 66 galaxie 500 cruise o matic   275/60/15 rear tires don't know the rear gear but would guess 4.11..it's just a sunday cruiser..79,000 original miles and mostly driven at around 50-55mph...It's just one of those curiosity thoughts like how would your stock motor hold up compared to the infamous Lemans motors that ran 24hrs straight. Could it run 24hrs straight as a stock motor.. I don't think anyone in their right mind would try to do that to restored a vehicle... I hope
