1963 Galaxie 390/C6 & 3:1 rear was 8mpg around town and 12mpg on the highway.  I think the C6 made it more thirsty than it should have been.  ???

Will the HEH-CL work with a 1963 Galaxie 500 (390 FE)? - Garrett

FE Technical Forum / Re: AOD behind an FE?

Good thread.  Any thoughts on how the 4R70/75 would compare?  The controller would be a cost adder.  I assume the AOD bell housing hurdle applies to the 4R70/75 as well?  Has anyone else done the math on total cost for potential transmission swaps behind an FE?  It would be pretty cool to see all the combos available with total swap costs figured.

Post pictures when you get it back. I'm interested to see what the mods were.

+1 for getting it running first then go from there. The patina look is in so I'd just clean her up as best you can and drive her for a while. Enjoy!

Thanks, Jay. I was thinking the transmission should be around 4 deg down or so based on what I thought would level the carb pad.  I'm sold. - Garrett

When setting the rear end pinion angle for a 4-bar install on my 1963 Galaxie, I first checked the transmission output shaft and saw 7 degrees downward toward the rear.  It seems a bit excessive to me. It has a 390 with a C6 and a hack-job crossmember from a previous owner.  I need to fix up the crossmember before completing the 4-bar and would like to know if you guys think it should be raised a bit.  If so, what's a good target angle? - Garrett

Regarding the chart, I find it interesting that it shows the US labor percent of total manufacturing costs as half that of China.  So even with higher priced US laborers, vs. the Chinese "slave laborers", the percent of total cost is still less.  I assume that means that if a US manufacturer has to pay a guy $35/hr to drill a hole, they'll eventually buy a machine to replace him.  For the US laborer, we're forced to increase our capabilities to compete.

I feel like the original poster took an unfair beating. The thread assumption seems to be that the local bike shop was selling US made over Chinese made product.  I do not think that is likely but I admit I don't know.  In this case, I think what was a question of buying from your local retailer vs. over the internet turned into US vs. them, i.e. China, which I think was a bit unfair.

Interesting comparison.  It would be neat to see a comparison between an expertly tuned carb setup vs. an expertly tuned EFI setup, i.e. rather than the self learning type EFI.  I suspect a distributorless setup would unlock a little more fine tuning potential with respect to the EFI? - Garrett

Is Cloyes 9-3108A-10 not applicable here?  Sorry if that is a dumb question. - Garrett

What you propose is doable.  The teflon bush concept works fine on all Whipple's marine dual throttle bodies.  They also start as castings with the throttle bores already there. - Garrett

Jay - Does the runner length include the length of the ports in the adapter? - Garrett

Bruce - That's a beauty you have there!  Mine's "Glacier Blue" which looks like white unless you're in the right light.  I'd prefer a bit more color but that's last on my list. - Garrett

Here you go.  The first picture is right when I bought her in SF.  The second is right after I installed the new wheels (Boss 338 w/BFG's).  She's down right now for disc brakes all around, rack & pinion power steering, and some suspension mods including a 4-bar rear and shockwaves.  She's no looker yet;  I'm saving that for last. - G
