57 Yr wait for a Dream Car? 1966 Cyclone GT 390
« on: May 07, 2024, 09:25:17 AM »
Way back in early 1966 I was at a local news stand and spotted a car on cover I thought WOW sure like that one. Turns out it was a 1966 Cyclone GT. As a 9 yr old kid I wanted one some day.  I had 3 different 1967 R code comets and I found a 66 base cyclone just like in ads Red with white interior and white pinstripe but the Unrestored super nice Cyclone GT was very elusive.

July 18th last year I bought this one from Mike Brunson uncle Bob.  Crazy nice well preserved car. So original in fact it is scary.
Since then I have learned history from new with some of that info that came with car. I am now the 4th owner.

Bought new July 27th 1966 by a couple in Dunsmuir CA.  The original owner passed away in late 2014 and the son was executor of estate listed it in a estate sale March 2015.  A local person whom I have been in contact with purchased it then sold it to Bob Brunson. Took me a few years to be able to purchase it after seeing a pic posted by Mike.  Last year while on vacation took a side trip to go look at car. Took a bit to scrape up the $$ but they kindly held it for me.  Great family for sure.  Nice to see the collection they had also.

Over next few days will post more info and photo's.

I have driven it around 1400 miles so far with no issues. All I have done is a NOS set of points and installed new exhaust that came with car. Did a bunch more research on it's history.

So nice to see a total bone stock GT390 and how well it performs. Carb to pan never been messed with. Bob n Mike did install a new water pump but rest as delivered with exception of battery, belts, hoses. Body, Paint, Interior, CHrome, Trim and full drive train have never been touched. Nearly shocking is even all power steering components, tie rods, ball joints, remaining steering part still original to car. A testament to the 56k miles that is fully documented.

Included with car is the Original Window Sticker, Original California Title/Pink slip and ALL registrations from day of purchase 7/27/66. ANother interesting fact is the car showed up here 7/28/23

This is video of it's arrival.

I think Jay Brown also a fan of the '66 Cyclone?

California black plate on car since day one.

Local shows its surprising how few people actually know what a Cyclone is.
I get comments like:  If that is so original why does it have a aftermarket hood then will argue about it not being orignial.

THe large photo again. Will try to figure out how to get them normal size.

Still trying to post proper size photo's

Been a while and forgot

Thanks! Really is a great car.  40 yrs ago was restoring the 66-67 Comets and Fairlanes. It was worth the wait for this one.

I did resize pics but for full view one will have to click on photo.

Beautiful car, and one of my favorite Mercs.  I did have one back in the day, some pics are below.  I bought it with no engine or trans, painted it black with the stripes and stuck a 429 SCJ engine and C6 in it.  Did pretty well in the street race wars back then; I told everyone it had a 351C ;-)  After it was in the pictures shown, I ended up tubbing it and putting in a full cage with the intention of bracket racing it, but the local track closed just when I was getting it finished up.  I ended up selling it; another one that got away.  The one photo shows me next to the car, 40 years and 40 pounds ago LOL!

Hey!  That original title has my family name on it.  You can just ship the car to me and I won't make any trouble...

What a gem! Amazing car. I note you running the different plates front and rear (original front plate). Do that here and you would end up in handcuffs!

I had my original West Virginia front plate on the Galaxie.
On the biannual tec inspection they just said...No idea to
put that number in the computer haha, whats the correct
licencplate nr?
The cops stoped me and told me to mount the real plate
or get fined next time

Where I live, only the back plate is used or issued, so the police don't look at or care about the front space and you can do what you want with it.  No plate, old plate, "World's Greatest Grandma" plate, dead possum, etc. makes no difference.

It took Randy 4-5 years of twisting our arms to sell it to him. I don't think there's another one as clean and original out there. It went to a great home, Randy takes exceptional care of things.

I'll need to buy it back some day.
