FE Technical Forum / One cylinder runner hotter
« on: March 29, 2016, 08:36:35 PM »
I need a little direction with a problem I was not expecting.  I started the car this afternoon just to keep the juices flowing and noted that #4 was running hotter than the other 3 the on that bank.  I am able to see #5 as well and it is running the same temp as 1-3.  I have noted not seen other problems but now I am confused by what I am seeing.  The other 4 were running 125 to 150 but #4 is running in upper side of 200+.  Suggestions for trouble shooting would greatly appreciated.
Stats on motor;
40 over
Stroked 4.125 or 445 cubes
Ford pi intake with aluminum heads
750 double pumper

Thanks in advance.

FE Technical Forum / let's talk valve covers
« on: February 26, 2015, 09:01:06 AM »
Wondering if anyone has suggestions on valve covers.  Currently have chrome powered by covers and although they clear the comp rollers in my 67 mustang,  it required taking out the baffles and thus I always have oil slung out of breather and PVC connection.  Trying to figure out and have a set that will clear booster.

Thanks

FE Technical Forum / CRACK In PI intake manifold
« on: February 16, 2015, 11:10:41 AM »
This is probably not unusual to find but since it is in the heat exchanger area should I bother to have it welded up?  The PO ha addressed a crack around the top hole but it looks like they ground it and did not weld it up.  Any help would be appreciated.

FE Technical Forum / Making noise on 390 build
« on: January 31, 2015, 08:56:46 AM »
I posted this on the hotrod fe stroker forum but since it does not seem to get the traffic that is here, figured I better get more thoughts on the subject.

I have a 390 that showed pretty hefty leakdown figures in 7 and 8 (exhaust leaks) so I yanked the motor. Now trying to decide what to do with it. It has a Hydraulic cam that I have not gotten to yet to see what it is but lumpy enough that it would not run the PB (vacuum around 11.5 at most). It has Seal power L2291f .30 over pistons, stock stroke based on rough measurement down the hole with competition cams roller rockers. It is topped off with a 700-750 DP mech that is a make over from a 650. The CR with .41 head gaskets shows it is about an 8.5 CR.

A trip to the track showed it was a 14.70 car at 100. It is in a 67 S code FB that is very nice.
I have run across a set of Aluminum heads that are very reasonable and considering adding those to the mix. My main hold up at this point is really deciding what else to do with it. It seemed to run well and a dyno pull showed it was around 370 HP figuring .15 VE but seemed low on torque. The way it ran seemed to bear that out. It pulled well and would jazz up to 6k W/O float but felt better at shifting around 5500. Although I like the thought of more cubes, my concern (of course) is expense. I am not out to break the bank but rather trying to figure out how to get to 450-475 hp with a good 400-450 tq for down low grunt.

So where do we begin?

FE Technical Forum / Advice on Wheels
« on: September 02, 2014, 08:41:16 PM »
So,  I have a question.   I lurk this forum daily and really enjoy the different subjects and really have my eye on the BBM stuff, so I keep coming back.
I currently have a 67 Fastback that has a medium roast 390 in it.  Roller setup with headers, 3.25 limited slip and a 750 DP on it.  The thing feels like it really pulls strong but I decided I wanted to know how it pulled.
To that end I bought a pair of mainly wore out slicks (cheap) and they are 26X10 15 inch rim M/T slicks.  The next thing is getting a set of wheels.   I feel sure that someone on this forum has gone through this with a 67 and I am looking to find a cheap pair of wheels that will work for this setup without setting me back much.  After all this is basically a good driver quality car that wins a lot of car shows.  Plus this is not an endeavor  I plan on staying with doing just one of those things I want to get out of my system.
If I end up being really disappointed I will be talking to Jay about a little hotter setup.

FE Technical Forum / The S-code mustang
« on: April 04, 2014, 07:58:56 AM »
I am writing this to let those who have an 67-69 S-code mustang know that there is (yet another) website that is available for them.  It is dedicated to the years considered the horsepower years.  I thought it was kind of a bad deal that there was no site for the first and succeeding year mustang that brought about those changes.  Drop by and register your S-code mustang.   Http//:www.scoderegistry.com

FE Technical Forum / Motor cutting out every now and again
« on: December 12, 2013, 09:39:13 PM »
Although I lurk (I love to see what everybody else does) I find a problem I am not sure about.
67 FB 390 GT W breakerless ford setup.  I guess you might call it 'Duraspark I'  Motor is fine and although I have had some problems with vapor lock in Texas heat during the summer it is all but cured with the addition of an electric pump.
Last weekend we put on I guess 160  miles round trip.   On the way out  we were cruising on the Interstate (about 55) and it acted like it died, so I reached down and put the clutch in and noticed it was still running at idle, so we went on our merry way.
Coming back that evening, it did basically the same thing about 3 or 4 times but each time it did not die.  Just like a hiccup, like a direct short or something but I am almost sure it is not that.
Question is there a way to check the module or could be the setup in the distributor causing the grief.  Any direction or help would be appreciated.
