FE Technical Forum / Re: Distributor Gear Roll Pin Broke
« on: May 26, 2022, 07:13:16 AM »
The only sheared pin I have experienced was caused by the pin not being snug in the hole.  It would tend to walk out, and once it got out far enough that only one end of the pin was engaged, it would twist the pin.  I ran a piece of safety wire through the pin to prevent its movement in the hole and never had another problem with it.

Hi Faron
I saw a diagram that showed green, purple and black wires.  The black is ground.  It showed the purple as +.  Mine is orange, purple and black as your diagram shows.  So is it safe to assume that purple is + on my setup as well?

FE Technical Forum / Duraspark Wiring Question
« on: May 14, 2022, 08:00:17 AM »
I have a Duraspark distributor with a 3 wire plug in connector.  The black wire appears to be ground.  Do the other two wires care about polarity?  In other words, which wire is + and which wire is -?
I am being cautious here because if you hook up a Pertronix I with the wrong polarity it fries.

Back somewhat before your designated time window, but Atlas Bucron tires were the designated items for a while. :)

Yes!  They left a nice little pile of rubber dust on the pavement.  I think Casler cheater slicks were a thing then too.

Non-FE Discussion Forum / Re: I shipped parts to the wrong country....

There is a form you can file online to recall a package you have shipped that has not yet been delivered.  It is a slow process internally at USPS but you can eventually get your package back that way.  I don't know if it is different for international shipments though, because the one experience I had with this Internationally involved FedEx who USPS used for the delivery.

Your next step will be to try to get a refund on the charges so you can ship again.  If you can prove that you did everything right and USPS screwed up, you should be able to win this.  I had a similar situation (though it was a domestic shipment) and I had to find a way to reach my local Postmaster to get any help from my USPS Branch.  I think it depends on the management at your branch on how hard it will be to get help.

I have learned that if you order something now with Ford 360 option on it you are screwed because of the chip shortage (or something related to that) interrupting the supply of parts.  I think that feature is standard on some of the high end products so that becomes a dilemma of sorts.

Your frustration seems well justified.  I will say that pretty much all of the car dealers are doing this same thing.  Manufacturers keeping demand high by limiting production and the dealers taking advantage of the demand.  You can read a post like yours on Forums from Kia to Porsche.  Not saying it is right, it just is right now.

I thought you had to expose the tip of the transfer slot in the secondaries to bring them into play at idle?  No?

Just expanding on Randy's observation, an early dated "U" carb like yours has the Cobra Jet correct numbers stamped on the metering blocks.  Later "U" carbs had that number plus the 4609 number stamped on the blocks (two different numbers on each block).  The CJ numbers are desirable and make your carb more valuable than a later dated "U" carb.

I have used Hagerty for decades and have always heard good stories about their claims service.  However, this concerns me;

In August 2021, Hagerty announced that it would be going public by merging with Aldel Financial, a SPAC. The merger deal is estimated to be upwards of $3 billion, and it should bring in up to $820 million into the public company. Once the deal is finalized, the company will be traded under the symbol HGTY.

I tried to get credentials last year and, over a 3 week period, had to respond to repeated interrogations and document requests from them about my qualifications to enter their sacred hall.  In the end, they turned me down.  All of this after approving me 3 years earlier!  Then, of course, it was cancelled.  This year they have been emailing like crazy for attendance.  I hope they get a very poor turnout of visitors after all the crap they put me through.

But, I will agree it is a great show and if the suppliers all show up as they have in the past, well worth going.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Static timing and total timing
« on: September 18, 2021, 06:05:25 PM »
It is easy to determine if the initial timing is the cause of a hard start.  When you are having hard start (slow crank) issues, pull the power wire off the coil and try again.  If the engine spins, the cause of the hard start is the initial advance.   Beyond that, you can't just crank up the initial timing without also limiting the mechanical advance in the distributor.  They work together.

I have two sets of Standard FD-8182 points new in the box, which are listed as being Y-Block Ford.  They don't have the felt wiper pad but they do have Made in USA stamped on them.  Free to anyone who can use them as long as you are in the Continental US.  Otherwise, I would need some help with the shipping.  jimwoods7 at outlook dot com.
