FE Technical Forum / PS saga comes to an end
« on: September 12, 2013, 05:31:05 PM »
attended the FE Reunion in May. My day of fun was cut short by losing my power steering belt in the burnout box on the third pass. I went back to the pits and tried renditioning it etc. Everytime I revved the engine the belt would fly off. Some forum members even tried to help and offer moral support. It wouldn't have been big deal but I also have hydroboost brakes. I decided someone was telling me something and parked it in the show area. When I got home I took a close look and decided the pump had to much end play and the pulley was wobbly. I tried locating a rebuilt pump locally which turned out to be a 2 month project no one could deliver one. Finally I located one on EBay. In the mean time I ordered a billet pulley and a billet housing from CVF Racing. It looked like a nice product. I assembled the parts and installed on my Mach 1. Immediately the pump whined and the hydro boost squealed when I depressed the brake pedal. My immediate reaction the pump was bad! I have had this problem before. I called the seller and he suggested sending it back and he would send it to his supplier for evaluation. He also suggested if I didn't want to wait I should order another one and he would credit me for the first one after it was evaluated. Sounded reasonable instead of waiting a possible few weeks more. The replacement $70.00 pump arrived I swapped the pulley and case to the new one installed it and filled with fluid. I started it and it was quieter but still noisy. WTF???I took it for a ride and as it got hotter it got louder, then the brakes started dragging and the steering got erratic. I parked it and had a few beers called it a day. Sunday I went out and put the sloppy end play pump back in. Guess what problem solved 2 bad pumps right? Being the anal person that I am, I took the bad end play pump back out and removed the stock sheet metal cover and installed the billet cover. Perfectly quiet unbelievable 2 bad pumps just my luck. I then put the fill cap on. I took a ride and made it to the end of the block and it started squealing, brakes dragging etc. WTF? I pulled over opened the hood and removed the fill cap, the fluid boiled all over the engine compartment with nice foamy red crap everywhere. I left the cap off and drove home and it was perfectly silent. I removed the fill tube from the canister and put the fill cap on it, guess what its not freaken vented!!!! I emailed them and they assured me they sold many of them with no problem. NOWAY!!!! the design is bad!!!!

I put in the new oil pressure sender today. The good news is cold I have 100 psi idling, hot 45 idling, step on the gas I have 75 psi. So the sender was bad as I suspected. I called Rodes about my PS pump he feels the fluid was to thin. I drained out the old Valvoline type F and put in motorcraft type F its a little quieter but still makes noise. I will try some type of additive like Lucas or something.  I need to replace my rear shocks what do you guys suggest?  I looked on summit and they go from 40 dollars to 150 each.

well some news to report, it appears I do have oil pressure, I have the factory idiot light hooked up in parallel also and it does appear to work ,so I will order a new Autometer sender. I called RODES RESTORATION PARTS BARN  and its 50 or 60 bucks to rebuild mine so I might just do that Ill have to call again Monday to confirm with the owner I spoke with his wife.

more likely its the fuel boiling not hot air. The modern fuels don't like high temps in a low pressure fuel system. Make sure your fuel lines are not to close to the engine. That seemed to cure my problem somewhat. If I idle for long periods on a hot day my fuel pressure fluctuates allot. then it just shuts off and starts like its flooded once you get going a few miles an hr its fine.

FE Technical Forum / Power Steering pump

My mustang puked the power steering pump at the FE Reunion it had to much endplay and kept tossing the belt. I ordered a rebuilt from Summit and waited 5 weeks and they no longer carry them. My local autoparts doesn't even list them anymore. I went on ebay and went Through 3 vender's before one showed up. I installed it guess what, it whines. What would make them whine? I had this before but just returned them for a replacement. These Thompson pumps are becoming hard to find. Any Ideas? On top of this I thought maybe a trip to 6500 would make it know I wasn't happy. Much to my surprise when I pulled into the garage it still whined and my oil pressure gauge was at zero. I also have the factory light hooked up and that wasn't lit. Hopefully its just the Autometer sender

Funny the aluminum driveshaft I bought seems 1 inch too short. The 7/8 spacer would have put the shifter in the right spot 1 inch further back and make the drive shaft perfect.

The spacer goes between the tranny and the bell housing. That option would have been better than getting the shorter input in my case. TKO's come with 2 different length input shafts.

Very nice!!! Just so happens mine went bad at Beaver Springs reunion. Do you see anything that can be replaced to eliminate in and out play on the shaft?  They also make a tool to remove and install the pulley.

They work on inertia if the car isnt slowing down it wont apply trailer brakes. Doesnt the controller have a lever that you can apply the brakes.

All I can say is I have used them up till 3 or 4 yrs ago. The front and back port only get two bolts on each side. I Took those same headers and put them on my 16 bolt Edelbrocks.
