FE Technical Forum / Re: Help with carb choice. Drew ?

Thank You all for the input. I think I will get 2 new 3310s  as they will fit the tunnel ram fine. If I do switch to the Med Rise I have some 600s I can switch out the bowls. My Sons 482 had 2 600s on a med rise 2x4. Solid lifter aroud 570 lift and 280 dur. Car ran fine. Tried a new pair of 660s. What a difference. Idle and cruising werent so good but wot was tire shredding  difference.  Brent I will call You for a cam when I order the pistons, THANKS ALL AGAIN.

FE Technical Forum / Help with carb choice. Drew ?

I am in the process of building a 427 stroked to 482. I have the trick flow heads and will use a solid flat tappet cam. Going to keep compression at 10.1 max. So no big duration or lift over 580 I’m thinking. I want a good running street motor that occasionally will see the track. I’m using an Edelbrock F66 cross ram because they just look way cool and I understand there are better choices but it’s what I want. Car is a 58 custom 300 with a BIO toploader and 411s out back. I have been looking at the quick fuel 750 slayer series. Not sure on vac secondaries or mechanical. I want a 4160 style carb in case I change My mind later and can use them on a med rise 2x4. What do You guys recommend. Drew ?

My Son bought all cm tubing for the 65 comet build He is doing. Enough to cert 8.50. He spent weeks pricing matl on the internet. We live in Washington State. Best price He found was in Floida. With shipping it was still cheaper to buy it there. We will bend it up ourselves but it cost near $1,700 bucks. So if a pro shop does it the matl will be marked up then install very expensive. Just for the weight savings. It's ALOT cheaper to get a cage kit from one of the big shops like Alston or whoever already bent up for your car. And you local fab Guy can install it.JMO

FE Technical Forum / Welding

Having done a lot of aluminum tig welding on many different things I'll throw in a few thoughts. First thing is You will need to bolt the head to a block  on an engine stand for  two reasons. One being the head will warp doing that much welding and bolted down will help a lot to hold its straightness. 2nd would be You could set the head at an angle comfortable to weld.
Using an older tig welder with a water cooled torch and using a helium argon mix will help but still need preheating and will transfer ALOT  of heat to the head. Enough to maybe make the seats fall out. You use a helium mix when welding thinner matl  to thick matl. Also for cast aluminum it takes way less time to melt the metal so You can begin welding. You would want to move around from port to port to help keep warpage down. What You really want is someone who has a new Miller Dynasty tig welder. They have all the newer technology on AC  to do just what your after. No preheat and no helium just set the machine properly and go for it. All the best aluminum weld shops have them. Those pretty Hogan manifolds and super nice looking repairs on aluminum blocks  are now done with these welders. I have a watercooled Miller 300 amp machine thats about 30 yrs old it will weld about anything but not even close to what these new machines do. I do want to buy one but they are 4 k for a 200 amp with not even a footpedal just the bare machine. Make sure the weldor You choose is  good, see some work Hes done dont take His word for it. Iv'e tested hundreds of weldors over the years and few were as good as they said.   FEDER
