FE Technical Forum / Re: Latest Installment - New Build 445 Problems.

just a thought here, I don't know what distributor your using, but maybe the advance weights are sticking causing you to see different numbers each time you check the timing, or the point plate is loose and moving around.  Rob L

If that car was mine it would have been started four pages ago, just to here it running.  Then deal with the wiring. A simple four foot piece of wire to the starter and battery each time it needed started. :). Rob

Hey Jason, I get that it will crank over, but have you actually tried to start it by jumping the solenoid. You might get it started or discover that you have some other electrical issues going on. You could just run a wire from the clutch switch to the starter and bypass every thing else to see if it will start. Just some thoughts to look at. Rob

Hi Jason, is their a backup light switch and or neutral safety switch on the trans that did not get hooked up?  Also is every thing else engine related that is electric working. If you actually turned on the key and jumped the starter solenoid would it start and run. Rob

No 352 also had them, and they say early 390, 406, 427 cranks had them till 64 or 65.  I have no personel experience with them, so not absolutely sure on those. Rob

My guess is that its just a 352 or a 360, judging by the half moon cut out in the crank flange.  I will bet there is no side oiler passage in the side of the block, just in the bellhousing area. Be nice if it was something special, bit unlikely. :(  Rob

Vendor Classifieds / Re: FE Intake Adapters
« on: February 21, 2014, 12:25:18 PM »
Hi Jay,  are you going to do the adapters that require different programs, such as the Yates stuff in order or is it going to be done later.  I am just curious, as I am not in any hurry to get my Yates style adapter. Also are you going to machine the  Yates adapters so the manifold will require cutting to fit?  Thanks Rob

That looks like our tanker trucks after many washings with the acid that the wash guys use. It will eventually turn a polished wheel to a dull white color.  Doesn't look to good, but will remove just about any thing that will discolor or stick to aluminum. My opinion is, I would rather have the dark finish, then the white color when the time comes to get one, and I do want one or two of those. :)  Rob

Looks like they may have used generic photos. I would think the winsor manifold would work, if it doesn't have the water cross over cast in it. The china wall on cleveland and windsor blocks have a different shape I think, which would not matter for what you are doing, unless it requires major surgery to clear the water cross over on the adapter.  Rob

Mike, I will get some pics probably this weekend or early next week, he was not home today when I was out there. When I see him I will get as much info on his conversions as I can.  The one truck actually uses a 2 wheel drive steering box, but its set up the same as the other.

Machoneman, thanks for the links on the c/r calculators, I'll have to look into that when I have some free time to mess around with them.  Thanks Rob

I think I would opt for the 282s also, but since you live at somewere around a 6000 foot elevation, that may be too much cam. With your first gear ratio and tall tires, it might be a real dog to get it rolling, especially with a load on the truck.
Does any one have some real world data as to how much altitude effects actual cylinder filling and dynamic compression, I am curios about that because I live at about 3300 feet.
About your steering box conversion,  I have a friend who had a 70 done and has a 77 that was done also, if you want I can get some pics of his stuff and post or send them to you.  Rob

Kerry, you can put the dura spark parts in the 427 distribuors, you just need to change every thing from the advance parts up, the main shaft is the same. the real problem is getting the 3 wires out. You would need to cut a slot in the housing, destroying the value of the dizzy.
I think I would try a different dizzy and see if it makes any difference, if not keep what you have.  Im sure their are other points conversions that would work well with a msd box.. I vote to keep the 427 dizzys for the correct look, dont think a billet dizzy is going to make muck difference in the end other then not looking right. :) Rob

Edit to add the dura spark parts from any v8 dizzy can be used to convert a points dizzy.

Hi Jay, in the event you can not run you're car as is, could you get the Boss 429 shock towers and put the front of the car back together that way, then use all after market race parts for a stock front end.

If that will not work, I vote to get some more weight out of the Galaxie, find some more horse power and beat them with a land yacht again ;D.  Rob L

Also I like the new forum, hope it does well and becomes another graet  source for FE info. :)
