That sucks.  Badly.  Damage to the criminal's vehicle?  Maybe he can be identified by that?

Hope you can find the parts to get that wagon fixed, that thing is super cool and riding around in it was a highlight of my visit...

I’m fine thanks.
Cops are checking the cameras in the area. A witness gave a good description.
The only parts that I think will be problem is the “wood” surround molding on the side.
I’ll get ‘er stripped down this weekend.

Hey Marc, hate to see that, glad you're OK.  From the look of the hood sitting pretty on the passenger side I'd guess a bit of push-off by the frame but nothing major beyond the obvious cosmetic destruction. People are swell.

I guess the other car is pretty beat up i got hit like that in the
Fairlane. Got about the same damage, the Volvo 240 that hit me was scrap
opened up the whole side of it like on the Titanic, frontwheel was tucked up against the firewall
the blocked front tire pulled him in the ditch where he rolled it two times

I dont think the frame is much damaged probably just bent the leg in front of
crossmember some. New radiator suport ,fender and lights and you are good to go
I have a radiator support i could have given you for free, a pitty the shipping would
kill that. Those "wood" moldings are they fiberglass if i remember correctly?
Someone reproducing those? Im glad i only get hit by plastic moped cars now
Just take some rubbing to rub away plastic contamination from my car

Yeah Heo, they are fiberglass. If it got down to it I’ll bet I could rebuild the bridge between the pieces but we’ll see how the parts search goes. I did a quick search on eBay and found a complete opposite side set for a grand or so but that’s lots of stuff I don’t need. Gonna keep my eyes peeled for a parts car also.
The offending car was a 200X ish Mercedes so I’ll bet it’s pretty tore up.

Thanks c-reed I’ll get ahold of him and see if he knows of some ‘66 parts. The ‘65 moldings are different but thank you for the tip.
Yeah Lima bean I would love to get to know this .......ummm......person.
On to today.
I’m getting her apart and seeing good news. It looks like just the frame horns are bent. If I was to go redneck I could just pound ‘em back straight and get on with it. I think I’ll take it easy though and push the boundaries of the “as long as I’m here” syndrome. My trucks work great so getting to work is no problem. I’d like to get the motor room cleaned up and reorganized and I have to pull the core support and straighten it. I have a new radiator and trans cooler to install. The po’s ran the trans fluid through a cooler then the rad. I’m going to separate them.
Here’s pix.

Best of luck!

Thank you Mr. Conley.
I was just outside jumping on the fender. It’s pretty bad but maybe it’s save able. I figured I could weld the torn part and work the rest but some of it has been pressure compacted. Kinda iffy.
As far as driving around it should be fine right now since the fender has been pulled away from the tire. Everything behind the core support seems to be good.

Update time.
All the parts have been secured and are on the way.
Frame horns were easy to straighten.
I have faux wood moulding coming but it’s broken so needs to be repaired. But that’s better than not having them. There is a place here in LA that does it. If I have the time I may try it myself.
Inner fenders and core support have been straitened and are at the paint shop. Core support is getting powder coated. Inners are getting satin black epoxy.
Yes I’m trying to turn lemons into lemonade but without going into the black hole of “as long as I’m here”.
The front end needed to be freshened up and I may never have done it cause it’s such a good runner. So.........l still hate that s.o.b.............but he/she gave me a good excuse to make my wagon better.

Here’s my shop ;D

Looking at your picture makes sense too. It was set up for towing.
Pretty sure that’s it.
What happened to the original 428?
What are the specs of the 390 in it?
So many questions.

Yep, that's the couple I sold it too, they were in a trailer club. Original owners lived up the street, bought it to tow their horses to shows with 4 kids. A guy in Petaluma had a 7 Litre that matched the date of the engine and just had to have it. I got that 390 over in Marin, just a nice build, could see the 2291 on the pistons with my borescope. Are the 428 fender emblems missing? hehehe... It had been sitting in the horse barn since 1989, had it running in 20 min. It went through at least one more owner up here that I see at Petaluma swap every year. Pretty sure I still have the records since new, the original owner was way past anal about that stuff

If you still have that stuff I’d love to have it. No hurry or worry though.
One emblem still there. The other one got blown off in the accident, prolly been run over a thousand times and swept up by now.
Bought a new set.
It still runs good. Nobody will know it’s not a 428.
I lowered it a bit with a Hotchkiss setup. Handles great.
I love that car. Drive it everyday.
Thanks for puttin’ 2 and 2 together Gene. It’s nice to know the history and you had it for a bit.

Yes Kevin decals.
And Mark has linked where to get them. Those folks also do repair/restore on the woodgrain fiberglass/wood molding. Though I’m thinking I may give that a shot myself then take the repaired molding to them to get the woodgrain installed on it. It’s a dipping process where you submerge the part then bring it up through a film that adheres to the part. Kinda like camo on a rifle.
The good thing is they are here in LA.
Slow process from here on out. Have to do some rust repair then get the rest of the car painted.

BTW Mark, love your wagon.

Thanks. Wagons rock!  I'm hoping to get mine painted in the original Saxony Yellow and apply the wood grain as well. The accident is quite a bummer. The person probably took off because they have no insurance or license. Glad that it is a fender bender and not a full on T-bone where people got hurt and the car is totaled.

Good info guys. Interesting process. I've seen a pair of valve covers done in camo recently and wondered how it was done. They looked better than the average rattle can camo job.

I ask because I've been gathering the XLT trim pieces for my Highboy. A couple of them look pretty rough. They all had wood grain decals inlaid on them when they left the factory.

Dang, Marc. I had no idea this happened. Time pressures kept me from the internet for a good part of the summer. I was heartbroken to see the original picture because I LOVE this car. I'm so glad you were able to repair it. On a car that old, most companies would just consider it a 'total'; I hope you were able to keep that from happening? It'd suck to have a "rebuilt" title on that car.

Great job on the repairs though. But....it loses a bit of the cool factor because it was all original before. I'm like you, I MUCH prefer to drive the old stuff over new. Just can't do it in the winter months here in Ohio, or rust becomes a real problem.

I suppose the perp will never be caught at this point, but hopefully karma will come around to set him straight.

Can only hope for karma kickback at this point Doug. If we could catch the bastard I could at least get 3500 back for uninsured motorist. But no catchy no money. And you’re right about collision insurance. They’d just total it and give me, what, 2500 bucks.
I’m gonna just put a positive spin on it and say hey at least I got to upgrade some stuff, albeit not in the timeline I would have preferred.

Got the mustang all caught up on mechanicals so now just order driveshaft, plumb, wire, start. Easy right ::)
So I had time to work on the wagon some more.
I couldn’t find any nice whole faux wood moldings so I bought some pieces and started matching them up to the pieces I have left.
Got it all hanging and connected with tape. Tomorrow I’ll get a fiberglass repair kit from Autozone or whoever and do the fiberglass connecting and matching.

Marc, West Marine has some quality 'glass materials and tools available if there are any of those stores near you.  I used their stuff to repair my heater / AC plenum on the Fairlane.  Bruce

I'll second the stuff from west marine.  I used their products for my cedar strip duck skiff and have nothing but good to say.

Yes, that should be easily fixable. A local in the car club redid the "wood" on his Falcon Squire, he painted it with brushed on paint in a sort of off white , bone shade. He missed white and brown and black until it looked right, then went over it with thinned brown paint and made the grain look. Then he cleared over it. The wood behind is MacTac for kitchen cabinets.

Took the easy and quick route. Looked on the ole interweb for glass kits. Friggin Autozone had them right down the street and the kit was small enough that I don’t have a bunch of not used crap getting old on a shelf. Also picked up a small can of kitty hair to do the bondo work.
Worked like a charm, sheeted the back and filled the front. Slapped some paint on it I had in the paint cabinet and viola, pretty close. I still have some body work to do on the front but that’ll keep for a few days.
I’m going back and forth with myself on how much to spend on it because it’s my dd and it sits in traffic a bunch. Can’t make it look to pretty but just enough to stay cool.

It's becoming pretty popular to drive around with a dash cam these days. That would have been nice to have when this guy hit you. Perhaps it's something to consider when driving a car like yours in traffic on a daily basis

I'm getting a bit nervous driving around i got hit two times the last summer
Fortunately i came out as winner both times. First time a retard in a Moped car
hit me in a parking lot and escaped the scene just left half of the plastic bodywork
behind. Now i can laugh at it, Imagine the sight of a retard fleeing in a crushed moped car
plastic pieces flapping in the wind at 30 kmh ;D ;D ;D. I know, should not laugh feel
sorry for him from time to time. The other time it was an old lady in some small gray car
probably a Toyota. All old Ladies drive gray Toytas,  Galaxie rear bumper 1, Gray Asian rear bumper Zero
But maybe I'm out of luck next time.
Dashcam is maybe a good idea

I’ve been thinking about the dash cam thing a lot.
I’m just not a guy that can do that. I don’t know why, but that’s me.
I think it’s a great idea, but just not for me.
Besides working on the mustang I’ve been getting the wagon back to better than before.
Painting a panel at a time as weather allows.
I’m using a red/brown primer and I gotta say, I’m good with how it looks. I don’t feel the need to get the stickers as this paint looks great and I won’t stress driving and parking around town.

I think it looks fine also, Marc, and as you said, you want it to be a driver, not something you have to worry and fret over. My one concern would be that brown oxide primer doesn't seal the surface and would make it vulnerable to corrosion, especially in a coastal area. Unless of course you used a sealer underneath?

Well I guess this is the end of this thread.
I’ve finished repairing all the molding. I have repainted all the panels and am happy with how it looks. Repaired some metal work in the rear. Am waiting for the rear bumper to come back from straightening and re chroming. Gotta find some hood letters but that’s not a problem.
