Very informative and well documented!! I've had to do with several GV set-ups, and my own most recent one made use of the 'short' version. It surely helps to keep things compact. Mine went into my '63 F-100 ICB and there was plenty of room. The last one before that was in a '67 Fairlane GTA that had a 460 swapped in, and it required almost a total floor re-work. OOF!

Jay---

Since, as I observed above, I'm running along behind with my tongue hanging out in regard to the details of your ignition problem, this may be of no value, but I have a complete Holley crank-trigger set-up for an FE, used on the Dyno for less than an hour, that was made-up from generic components. Everything that makes it for an FE was fabb'd in Roush's Prototype Shop when we built the engine for the 14-part series I did for Mustang Illustrated Magazine.

It's simply setting in a box under the bench in the garage, and I probably won't have use for it until year after next at the soonest. You are more than welcome to make use of it if it would be of any benefit to you.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Exhaust port mismatch?

For several years, so far as I know, Dove heads have had a raised exhaust port location. But I was under the impression that the amount of relocation was a half-inch. It might be worthwhile to call Dove (440 236 5139) and ask Earl for some info.

As the electrically-challenged one in my family, I have to admit to running along behind you guys, panting and with my tongue draggin' on the ground.

I've come to the conclusion that you have a cracked veeblefeetzer, and if you can find a cracked veeblefeetzer fixer you'll be in good shape!! ;D

Jay, this was not a failure, but only a setback. It's a time-out that gives you clear until this time next year to get everything in shape.

There are only twenty four hours in a day, for all that you've managed to get about twenty eight hours of value out of each day for the last several months.

This would only be a 'fail' if you were to choose to stop here and not carry on, and I see only resolve on your part.

Good Luck!!!!!

I've just propped my chin on my fist to keep from being open-mouthed at the extent of your efforts. I agree with your conclusions as to the way to proceed.

On a slightly different note, is there a reason for NOT using a dry-sump? Much more room around the pan, and greater control of windage. And it would also obviate the necessity for your vacuum pump, as well as adding capacity. What's not to like?

Joel, I just got around to reading your thread. My thoughts, for what they're worth---

Just as you got it, it's a curiosity. Something to drive down to the store or in a parade. If that floats your boat, fix the horn and leave it as-is.

But for something to have fun with, I'd re-do the exterior to make it pretty, and being careful to keep the stock 'look', put a modern suspension and powertrain in it. (An FE, of course!) With such things as the original brakes, it isn't really safe to drive if there's any kind of traffic around you. My own '63 F-100, with a solid front axle and drum brakes, was 'iffy' in traffic. I converted it to a Volare front suspension with R&P steering and disc brakes, and used such things as tubular A-arms and aftermarket components to make it safe to drive. What a world of difference!  JMO

In any case make it something that suits you!

I'll tell a really stupid on myself. Had exactly the same sort of results over a winter when Brother Lon and I were running his TP-equipped '67 Mustang. First trip to Milan in the Spring and, although everything ran perfectly, we couldn't get out of the 13s. After several passes, and nightmarish thrashes in between, we found that a linkage arm was bent and we weren't getting WOT. Ten seconds with a pair of pliers and everything went back to normal.

And as a touch of SOHC development history, did you get a set of the very first design heads installed, by accident? The first design had the plug in the technically perfect position. But the rest of the engine didn't like it. When they moved the plug to the present position, with no other changes, they gained over a hundred horsepower! (It's easy to tell the difference, since the first design had the plug wells on the bottom edge of the cam covers, instead of the top.)

Jay,
It's been my experience that, up to a certain point in a project, you're so swamped in details that it seems as if no progress is being made. But then it begins to really come together and every little thing moves you onward and the progress is easy to see. You are undoubtedly very close to that point. And as Red Green says, "We're all pullin' for yuh". With friends like Joel, (even with 'Hemi' in his name ;)) it just gets that much closer!!

It's easy for me to sit back, read your weekly blog and make comment. BUT---you do realize that you are, virtually singlehandedly doing what, most often, requires a full full-time crew of professionals to accomplish? I remain in total awe of what you are doing, and actually have little doubt that you WILL get it done, done right, and ultimately triumph! I doff my hat!!!
