Little pistons fell out of starter?
« on: August 16, 2023, 10:08:12 PM »
Not sure what is going on. Car (1965 Mercury Park Lane with 428 and C6) has been sitting for awhile, starter is fairly new. Charged the battery up (tested good at store), spray the carb with starting fluid, expecting it to start right up, no. Not turning over, starter clicking/grinding. While trying to get it started, it sounded like something fell out of the car. I found 2 of these little metal pistons on the garage floor. I’m stumped.

ETA: New starter ordered. It’s gotta be the starter, right?

Those are the rollers out of the starter "bendix" drive one way clutch.
Hopefully the ring gear/flexplate is not damaged.
Every 20 minute job is 1 broken bolt away from becoming a 3 day ordeal.

Yes. Hopefully. CJ flexplate would be hard to replace. I paid a mechanic to put this starter in a couple years ago. Wasn’t cheap.

Probably the starter given the bearings falling out but in the meantime I'd be verifying I could turn the engine over by hand, either with a socket on the crank or just by turning the fan and holding the belt tight.  If not, pull the plugs and try again in case hydrolocked.
