Title: 2016 Engine Masters
Post by: Royce on December 26, 2015, 02:37:15 PM
The rules are out, and vintage class remains much as it was, with the exception that straight 6s and 8s are allowed this year...I heard there is a warmed up Duesenberg staight 8 out there that has not yet been put in a car.. Now that would be a show stopper to enter it in the competition.. Might score OK too..

What do you think Joel...

THAT would be awesome.  How much RPM do they have to turn during the contest, Royce?

Test range is 3000 to 6200 rpm.. score the 3 best pulls.  you make as many pulls as you want in 30 min. time limit. Didn't Joel put some updated parts in that engine?  It should do 6200 with ease.

Are they going to have their own class? Seems like they would have a disadvantage over the V8s. Of course there are a couple guys who could probably blow that myth apart.

The crank is stock, with a huge stroke (5" I think?)  Lots of piston speed there, even at only 6000 RPM.  As cool as it would be, he'd be risking a priceless engine...

Good point Jay. But, what would happen if the entrant did not hit the upper rpm limit on purpose? Would the runs count or not? Instant elimination?

Entrant tells the dyno operator what rpm they want to end the pull.  Must start at 3000, but they will only use the dyno numbers between the parameters, or what you tell them under the maximum.  Case in point, the Poly motor did not complete their three pulls but still placed 2nd with their averages.  A couple of the engines fell on their faces at 5400 rpm or so, but still made tons of low end torque.   Average torque plus average horsepower x 1000/cubic inches-rounded up, for scores.  302.1 cubic inches = 303 cubic inches.

My question was:  Will the numbers change if you go past the upper rpm but still use the cut off number?  IE Set the upper limit at 6500, but only read the numbers to 6200 rpms.   Joe-JDC

If you could not hit the rpm then 0's would be averaged in for the final rpm. That actually happened to a couple of the LS class entries this yr.. Pretty much a score killer..... Yeah 5 inch stroke would be pushing it..   It would be an entry just to show off and bring a wow factor, and show what are remarkable engine it is. Nobody would expect it to be competitive. The way it works out is that in a given class there are only a couple entries that have a chance to win anyway. The rest of us are to fill the field and show off our stuff.  Just like most racing  lol

So Joel is bringing a Duesenberg engine? That is very cool.
As reserved and formal as you would think Duesenberg owners must be I got to spend an evening of beer drinking in the parking lot with them in Auburn Indiana when I was on my way to Goodguys Indy from the Ford 100th and they were in town for the big Auburn Cord Duesenberg museum show.

A bunch of real regular car guys and even though they spend much more on restoring their cars they were friendly to a guy wearing a Ford shirt.

It would be really fun and interesting to do but: some expensive things you can blow up and say "it's only money,  I'll get another one". Not  a Duesenberg model J though,  there is zero blocks available.
