FE Technical Forum / Re: Running out of fuel on the big end..
« on: February 24, 2019, 10:31:48 PM »
I don’t think your mph is that that far off if at all for the ET. Couple years ago when I borrowed  a 454 inch stroker combo for a few weeks in my truck with a trans brake and mid-low 1.5 60fts, 4.57 gears, 31 tall tire, my then 4000lb F100 ran a best of 11.37 @ 116 mph. If memory serves it was running 6100-6200 in the traps. Just a 3/8 line to the carter M6905 pump and then double -8 lines to 1000 cfm Holley. I’m also in the process of upgrading my fuel supply system, bigger line, electric pump plus the mechanical. I’m also surprised you did an 8 jet swing and didn’t see any MPH/ET change.  Just another reference point for you. I would also vote for shifting a little lower and maybe  add a little gear.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Has anyone gone sub-.040 quench distance?
« on: February 17, 2019, 03:25:32 PM »
I’ve run 0.036 before. Pistons were nice and clean around the quench pad. What skirt clearance are you setting the pistons/block up for? 4032 alloy I believe can be run tighter than the old TrW’s I was using. If that’s the case then you should have less piston rock than I did. I don’t see a problem, I’ve heard of guys running tighter than this with steel rods and tight skirt clearances but 0.036 is as far as I’ve pushed it. Assuming your bore size is in the 4.08ish area... bigger the bore, shorter skirt, and longer the stroke might need a little more room. Good luck with the build.

John,
Thanks that would be awesome.

But I would prefer it not be ported or milled to death, and it needs to hold water in the correct places.... trying to make a better matched pair than what I currently have. Also looking for dove manufacturing high riser rocker end stands that have the head bolt provision. Thanks for the space.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Goofing off with some CJ heads...

Best I've personally done with a C1 head was 296/19x @0.700 with 2.09/1.65 valves 3/8 stems. I often wondered if the CJ casting was at all any better than the C1's these were flowed on a sf600 on 4.312 bore fixture.

Hey werby,

Good to hear from you. Yes I'm still running the same old 2" home built headers and 3.5 collectors and 3" x-pipe with cut outs  from years past... ironically the big engine only lost a tenth in the 1/8 from plugging the cut outs and running through the full exhaust... the torque converter is still too tight and I don't have enough gear in the truck for a optimum pass as I still want to drive it on the street. I thought my headers were too small also but Blair told me to only step them up to 2.125 and the appropriate collector. I'm working a lot on trying to get my business where I'm comfortable and happy then hopefully I'll have some time to work on the truck some more. Yes 4100 lbs going down the track. I'm looking into possibly changing the front suspension to struts and adding the rest of the tubes to make the truck legal to run faster than 10.0... don't know if or when I'd get there but I'm entertaining  the idea lol. Thanks

Always loved that car! Going the N/A route this time? I'm Hoping to hear you get some nice results. Sadly I won't be attempting dragweek in 2018... maybe 2019... good luck to the Millers.

Vendor Classifieds / Re: NIB McLeod 75211 Clutch Kit...

Brent,

The clutch kit is $800 or just the disc and bearing? I'm in need of a pressure plate also. What's a person use for a clutch fork with that setup? I have a steel flywheel that a stock clutch bolts to and a old Lakewood bell,is all I've collected so far. Thanks again

Here's a link to blairs engine build thread of my engine, it has a victor intake and a set of blairs edelbrock pro port heads on it... http://fepower.net/simplemachinesforum/index.php?topic=3999.0

Brent,

Would it be possible to get a more aggressive clutch disc? Looking for something to hold 700ish hp and be somewhat streetable. If you have something to fit that bill let me know... I'm still interested in this deal also for my mud/street truck.

Thanks,

Cody

If anybody has some they will part with I'm in need of two end stands and two center stands if possible. Also looking for one high riser C4AE-F head that hasn't been ported or milled to death, doesn't have to be virgin, just useable. Thanks

Brent,

Is this a button style ceramic disc clutch that would work in front of a NP435? If so I'm interested. Let me know, thanks,

As most of you probably read already.  I got a new mill in the mistress. Blair gets most of the credit for the engine since it was mostly his recipe. I sent him a bunch of parts and he worked them into the combo. Anyway, the truck now has a new narrowed, back braced 9" rearend with vented/slotted disc brakes, 35 spline axles, and a big pinion 35 spline, 4.57 pro gear. 31.25 x 12.2W Phoenix tire on a 14" rim, leaf springs from LMC truck with custom fabricated by me spring hangers and brackets. Also added a 6 point roll bar and 5 point harness. Went to a treaded skinny street radial tire on the front for drag week last year that I didn't get to go to... it also has a sumped stainless fuel cell and stainless battery tray all hidden under the flare side bed. Anyway, with all the changes and myself losing 35 lbs the truck still gained and now weighs between 4050-4150 depending which rear tire and how full the fuel cell is. Last weekend at annual ford shootout memorial race in hardinsburg KY (US 60 dragway) the truck ran a new best of 1.43 60 ft and 6.53@104 mph. I haven't updated anything lately because I feel there is more left in the combo. In my mind there should still be a tenth or two to get yet if my new converter ever shows up from ATI... I could also buy another set of gears because I'm not optimized for the 1/4 mile yet much less the 1/8 mile. I'll update again if I have anything of good news to report yet this season... with my business being busy and moving/renovating a old building hasn't left me much time for playing at the track.

FE Technical Forum / Re: 450hp out of leftover parts?
« on: April 21, 2018, 07:36:47 AM »
On the valve train deal I wouldn't normally recommend this but it's been done with good results for years in a truck pulling engine I put together, rules mandated stock appearing valvetrain. It's just got a set of pump builders hd shafts, stock aluminum stands, stock bolts, and new stock adjustable rockers from Napa. It's been to 6500-7000 rpm for 15 sometimes 20 seconds at a time. Also has some drag strip passes/street miles on it. Anyway, good luck with what ever direction you decide to go. You should have a little more torque than my build did, hp would be a question mark, possibly a little more also. BTW my heads had 2.03/1.56 stock OEM valves. By the math on paper using my build as the reference point with hp per cube 396 versus 416 would get you 474hp/470tq, with adding the 428 crank. Would be fun to dyno and compare. Have fun with it.

Chilly,

Your build closely resembles my trucks 390 build from back when. It's posted in the proven build section under "390 pump gas deal". Very similar cam, heads etc. some differences would be the dual quad intake, and 428 crank, but it was a dyno proven 453hp and 447 lb ft of torque 6300/4700 rpm peaks, but that was also with 2" primary tube/3.5 collector fenderwell headers, when I tested my trucks 2wd 1-3/4 x 3" headers they were down 10-12 lb ft and hp across the whole test range from the fender shell exit headers. You didn't speak of valvetrain but that's one area where I did spend some money on good shafts, TI retainers, HS rockers, arp studs and end stands.

Good luck with the build.
