Non-FE Discussion Forum / Hood caddie
« on: August 03, 2023, 04:21:11 PM »
I got a little bored today now that my '67 F250 is pretty much done so I built a hood caddie for the shop using scrap stuff I had laying around. It works in conjunction with the one man hood removal/installation fixture I have for my cherry picker. I should have built this a long time ago.

A friend of mine took an autobody repair class at the local community college...for almost 20 years to use their facilities. He just kept signing up for it. It got to where he knew more than the instructors.

Very nicely done, Jay! When I saw the "accessory" Steve found in the car it reminded me of when I bought my 66 F100 on auction from the Ford County Sherriff's Dept.. They told me they got it as a drug seizure. When I was cleaning it out I found an small test tube with a bulb on the end in unused condition. Since it was unused I didn't classify it as a crack pipe but I destroyed it none the less. Had it been used I would have called the Sherriff's dept.

Just thought I'd pass this along. I noticed several Ford items mis-labeled or under labeled. I saw several sets of 429CJ heads and SCJ blocks listed as 429-460 parts. There are also a bunch of OEM(Ford) Holley carburetors.

Funny I was just on Jegs looking at a 140 amp alternator 1 wire from tuff stuff. What is the benefit of the G3 conversion and what does it entail
I made the switch because I run a couple of drag-n-drive events and with an aftermarket 1 wire alternator I felt the need to carry a spare one with me since most parts stores do not carry them.  When I wrote "parts houses" I meant the local O'reilly's, Auto Zone etc...

X2 on the Ford G3 conversion. OEM unit is rated at 140 amps and is available at any parts house.

Better be careful Alan, if you keep rubbin that truck it will soon be too pretty to haul the grass clippings to the compost heap.

When I started this I was hoping I could get the paint/clearcoat on smooth enough that all I would need to do was buff and polish it. However, I got too much orange peel so I had to color sand it. Since I don't know if there is a threshold when color sanding where you can still leave some orange peel and still come out good enough I had no choice but to sand it smooth. So it was done more by necessity than choice, LOL!

I got the passenger bed side color sanded today. Just the driver's bed side left and it will be ready for polishing. :)

I finally got the truck all painted. It's been a long row to hoe(as my dear grandmother used to say) but I am almost there. Being a rank amateur I have yet to figure out how to spray clearcoat smoothly so as a consequence the vertical surfaces have a lot of orange peel I get to spend the next week wet sanding to smooth it out. But it's getting there. Also, I am happy to announce that the 428PI motor (w/cj heads) I've owned for around 40 years will be swapped in for extra towing performance. :)

I had a 428CJ head (swap meet item) that had a dented spot between two combustion chamber. It either got it from riding in a trailer pushed against the corner of another head or maybe something was dropped on it. Anyway, it ran clear across the two combustion chambers at the narrowest point . I stippled the area with a pin punch then brazed it. It has held just fine.

You might give George(Anderson) a call at Gessford Machine shop in Hastings, Nebraska. That's where I get my machine work done and they KNOW Fe motors.

Nice score, Jay. On a side note, you probably saved it from an LS swap too. :)

With the huge parts shortage problem right now I was wondering what is the best strategy. Order now and get in line or wait until I see them in stock again? Or is there another strategy out there.

Nice. But is that a weak spot on all similar Ford trucks? Odd area to rust so badly yet the rest is o.k.
Yes and no. I have seen other trucks rusted there, possibly due to the type of seam sealer used at the time. I think in my case(it has been painted before) it was exacerbated by the painter putting the seam sealer in really thick, about 3/8" thick and over time it pulled away a little and allowed moisture to get in behind it and rust.
