FE Technical Forum / Re: Bell Housing ID
« on: January 01, 2022, 01:29:31 PM »
66-67 gt fairlane, cyclone, mustang had the bell with the hump all the way around,i just used one and put a 12" clutch in it,cleared everything good,no problem.
C60A 6394 D with a large Z is the housing with the hump designed for 12" clutches. It's a 67-70 Mustang/Shelby FE housing.  The C5 housing has clearance issues even with the 11" diaphragm Centerforce cover.

i bet many of us have eaten work because we "assumed" information provided was correct. The springs were installed before the heads went on the car with the custom cam grinder's specification and installed height.

The ARP studs that were supplied from Precision Oil Pumps didn't bottom. I did think to check that. If anyone tells you ARP always gives the best advice with their fasteners I have news for you...
Anyway, Time serts were installed in the place of the helicoils. I don't think this will be an issue in the future.

I have about 335 over the nose. That shouldn't have been an issue with the Edelbrocks. I dumped their roller cam springs and went with what was suggested by the cam manufacturer.

Free advice. I have Edelbrocks. They use a nasty little thing called a Helicoil. I bought the ARP stud kit from Precision Oil Pumps. The studs tighten up with an allen wrench. I double nutted the 3/8-24 stud and torqued them to 45 ft lb. I installed the rocker shaft assembly and torqued to 55FTLB per ARP instruction with the lubricant.  It pulled three of the helicoils out of the heads. I spoke to a couple others who said to simplt use the T-handle allen and tighten them hand tight.
Also be VERY careful when tightening down the shaft assembly. Do it evenly if there is load on the pushrods.

FE Technical Forum / Re: Starters
« on: December 29, 2021, 05:31:38 PM »
I ran a hi torque factory Ford starter four four years until it failed. I purchased a power master hi torque factory style starter to replace it. The first one had the snout machined incorrectly and made contact with the flywheel. The second unit had the bendix stick and damaged the flywheel ring gear.
I returned the second starter directly to Power Master in Chicago at my cost less than three months later.
They called and asked about the compression of my engine. it's about 10.3:1.  Immediately they blamed the compression ratio as the issue with the starter.
No information on the website about the started being rated for 10:1 and lower. Most OE FE engines are 10.5 or more. Why the hell would you need a high torque starter for an engine with less than 10:1?
They offered no compensation for the bendix damage to the ring gear, labor to drop the transmission or having to change the starter twice and return it to Summit Racing. They now want me to purchase their high dollar mini starter with a credit of 100.00 for the bad bendix unit and pay the difference of 171.00 and return shipping of 25.00.  '
Needless to say their won't be another power master.

The C5T housing will not fit an 11.5" clutch. It will fit an 11" clutch.  The C6OE Mustang bell will clear an 11.5 and 12" clutch cover. It has a hump mid housing for clearance.  You may get a low profile diaphragm 11.5" under it, but most make contact.

If you have original BJ-BK dual quads there is no vacuum port. So that rules that out for those running restored engines. At least externally. Despite filling the baffle in the Le Mans cover with the stainless pad and the reduced internal diameter of the vacuum port that runs into the front factory threaded port I still use oil. It's frustrating and expensive.

A bit late but I would like to extend my wishes for a Merry Christmas and may the new year restore hope that so many have lost during the plan-demic.

Heo: I am sorry for the loss of your father. It seems you both enjoyed many of the same passions.
When my times comes I can only pray it is peaceful with loving family.
God speed to you and your family. May you always reflect in the positive. In my opinion the separation is only temporary...

Mike: The cost of PPG paint and clear was about 2500.00. The color sanding and buffing was 40 hours. A decent job is 15-20K if it's painted in components and reassembled. I just went through this four years ago with no rust repair or sheet metal work.
I think many doing actual restoration and not just a spray job are shocked at the cost involved.
Best of luck with your vehicle!

I can't use many of the options available because if having to keep the car stock in appearance. The reduction from the 1/2 hose internally is likely a great idea too.

I have an issue as well with my 67 Shelby with the PCV pulling oil into the intake. I packed stainless pot scrubber material from Brillo on top of the baffle in the valve cover. It made a huge difference.

FE Technical Forum / Re: FE Adapter to block gasket Fel-pro number?
« on: December 06, 2021, 08:52:28 AM »
Thanks. I found the paper gasket at Napa. I like the embossed gasket if they work.  The reproduction housing uses the performance version that has the passage openings cut to match the adapter opening. The thick paper seems to be oil saturated.
