Dry, or "sooty" black typically indicates rich in fuel, while wet black typically indicates an oil control problem. For rich to be "wet black", it would almost have to be drowning in fuel and leaving tell-tale signs of black exhaust when the throttle is stabbed or blipped, like you mentioned.
